I grew up with aviary birds (cockatiels, ring necks, princess parrots, love birds, bourkes, scarlets, finches, red rumps and quail) but didn't really become a companion bird person until I met my husband. He brought with him a little male budgie, who came to stay with me while he went interstate and then never went home again.
Last year that little bird sadly passed away, and this year I was ready to find a new budgie to bring home to roost. I'd decided that I wanted to try training the next bird we had, and came across Trained Parrot's resources.
WikiLeaks came home on 4th February as a 5 month old, partially hand tamed (and unfortunately clipped). He's an amazing bird, and 10 minutes of training regularly most days has produced wonders. He loves prop training - target training was done in 2 minutes and we've progressed to fetch, fetch to a target (basket ball) and multiple fetch (counters into a cup). Behaviours are a little harder, but he's still a quick study. We've got step up, wave and turn happening now, and I've started to introduce a cardboard tube.
With tricks he's learned, I'm focusing on getting the tricks clearer - which is less about him and more about improving my ability to give distinct, consistent cues. Click training really helps me to better understand what Wiki wants by making me pay attention to his behaviour. I can't wait until he's flighted again and I can start working on flight recall!
