Me and my King

Postby Ashlea » Tue Apr 17, 2012 5:16 am

Hi everyone. My name is Ashlea, I have just come back to the world of owning a parrot after a birdless few years (previously had 2 Rainbow Lorikeets that I had hand-rared, both passed away 3 years ago- ). I had been thinking of getting another parrot for a while now and had decided on a handraired Quaker (or maby a conure). But my plan has since changed, yesterday a guy came into my shop, and dropped off king parrot he couldn't keep anymore. He is 3 and a half months old, and aviary raised.
I dont really have any experience attempting to tame a aviary parrot and expect I have a lot of work to do.
I am hoping that he is able to become confident around me, he seems pretty quite yesterday for a bird that had just been through a pretty stressful move.
He will not come up to me if I approach the cage but neither does he run away if I move to where he is.
Wont take food from me when I hold it up to the cage but he will as soon as I move my hand away.
Im not sure but I think those might be pretty good sign for a bird on this first day away from his clutch mates and who has had little/no human contact before.

Im really hoping that this works out, I would love to give this guy a loving home and have him happily settled.

Looking forward to reading through some of the discussions on here and hopefully getting a fab ideas for a handsome new family member

Thanks for the re-assurance.
We actually had a really good morning today. Followed by a really bad afternoon. I had him sitting on my hand by the end of this morning, so happy with the progress.
Although I think we might have had a big set back this afternoon. My stupid fault!!!! I had him on my hand inside the cage, he started to head out the cage door and silly me panicked once I realised and went to slide the door down at the same time he was on way out. Gave him a fright he started to fly out and the door caught his tail. I managed to get him out and back in the cage very quickly but he lost a few tail feathers. I felt so horrible about it because he was really scared afterwards and had been so trusting all morning. He has not been as keen to get on my hand since but will still eat from my hands so hoping it wont take to much for him to forgive me.
