Hello . New to your forum

Postby Ducorp » Fri Apr 27, 2012 11:59 am

Hello everyone. my name is Gary and i own a 5 year old ducorp cockatoo named snowie.

i'm currently looking to buy a new baby parrot. i really like the hahns macaw .
ive read that large macaws cant live with cockatoos because they cant cope with the dust. is this the same for the smaller hahns macaw.

my cockatoo isnt to bad with dust. i have a very bad allergy with dust and pollen and my ducorps has never been a problem for me upto now .

Welcome to the forum!

I am not sure about the respitory problems with Macaws, or if this is also true with Hahns, but I seem to remember Macaws all have very sensitive airways, even for parrots.

I recently read a great article about dust and macaws: http://www.birdtricks.com/blog/why-you-should-keep-certain-parrot-species-separated/
Of course, depending on your living quarters and how well you can keep the dust down, you can probably keep your new bird in the same room as the cockatoo just fine.

thanks shelby. my cockatoo really isnt bad at all. my mum and friend both own african greys and there cages get full of white dust in just a few days, my cockatoos cage stays very clean for a 4-5 day period and doesnt get the build up of white dust on the cage. so i also think after reading that i will be ok with a little hahns.

i did want a severe. slightly bigger but in the UK there isnt many breeders for this bird so very hard to find

Never heard of anyone having a problem keeping them in the same room. I think as long as you bath your 'too and clean regulary you will be fine.
