Hi From Texas!!

Postby mack0311 » Tue May 01, 2012 9:27 am

Hey Everyone,

I'm a new proud owner of a Black Capped Conure named Sammy. He's (I'm not sure of the sex) sweet but gets aggressive and bitey at times. I'm watching Barbara Heidenreich's videos on positive reinforcement and I'm sure will have many questions along the way. I'm happy about this site and look forward to sharing my progress with all of you.

Welcome to the forum.

Sammy looks ornery. It's the smart ones you have to look out for.

Thanks!

Sammy is a rescue bird that I adopted and he's just a baby. I have a hard time getting him to want to go back in his cage. I try to make it a positive experience for him, but that and the nipping are my struggles at the moment. What do ya'll think about serving Sammy a warm meal in the mornings, like oatmeal? Would changing his diet up help with his aggresion? Right now I'm feeding him pellets, fruits, and vegetables with an occasional almond. Thanks in advance. :D

Why the cage, his protection, or yours?

Ours sleep together in an open cage we cover after they go to bed, and they hang out most of the time on top of a large cage with food and toys. Graybeard goes in the cage once in awhile to kick back. Chewbaca goes on chewing expeditions, and sometimes gets caged for a time-out.

Since Sammy is a baby he might like some warm oatmeal in the morning. No milk. See if he will eat it off a spoon. He will learn to come to you for his oatmeal.

Treat him like the baby he is.
