SAD INTRODUCTION

Postby Peanut » Tue May 29, 2012 3:30 pm

Hello - this is the first time I have found this site and it is for a sad reason. My 7 year old Senegal parrot over the past couple of years has started to totally destroy her feathers. I think it was caused initially be stress when we moved house. However, when we occasionally go away on holiday and she is cared for by someone else, she does it even more. Having just returned from a week's holiday, she has now totally destroyed her primary flight feathers. She snips off all the filaments leaving only the shafts. She can now no longer fly around the room as she used to. Her frustration is awful to see. I am very sad about this and have consulted an avian vet who has suggested that re-homing in an environment with other senegals may be the best way forward to give her a better life.

Whilst I would be sad to see her go, I only want what is best for her. Does anyone know of any collectors/breeders of senegals in the Sussex area of England who I could contact?

What avian vet have you used? Have they actually done any medical testing? I only say this because research suggests up to 70% of pluckers have a medical issue rather than just a psychological one. The stress of moving house and being left with someone else may have just weakened your sennies immune system and brought this issue to light.
Of course it may be a behavioural issue but if it is I think moving her to another new envvironment won't help much, especially if she hasn't been around other birds for such a long time and snhe is hand raised and therefore imprinted on people.

What have you tried in order to resolve the feather plucking? maybe some of us can help throw some ideas your way which might help, we might come up with something nobody else has suggested to you.

Welcome by the way.

**edit** if your adament that you need to rehome her I know of a breeder in the midlands who may be able to put you in touch with someone who can help, I think he has alot of contacts.
