Hi! I'm new here and hopefully ill be able to get some help for my brown headed parrot named word. :e will be a year old next month and I've had him since he was 3 months old. He was really good till a couple of months back. I've taught him to say a few things and he knows how to step up and down. He just has a shrieking and biting problem. Any time I'm not giving him attention he will shriek continuously even if he is out and about for the most part of the day and no matter what I try he won't stop. He bites as well if he is sitting on my shoulder for a long period of time and I try to take him off. Can someone help me?

Welcome to the forum.

Short answer, yes, there is help and methods to work with this.

Long answer, its complicated. You have to first realise that you have tought him these behaviours through rewarding (unknowingly, I am sure) them.
We will need more details from you regarding both issues, so I suggest you post in general parrot care or basic taming.

Whats probably happened, is that you have previously given in to the screaming, and by responding to him in any way, you have reinforced that behaviour as something that works to get your attention. This is hard work to get through and reverse, but it can be done. We had a screaming issue, but managed to replace all screaming for attention with a wolf whistle.

It is the same with biting, your parrot has learned that through biting it gets what it wants, in this particular case, staying on your shoulder.

Please read these articles by Michael, and then post in the other forum sections!

Yes apply as many of these training methods above to your bird as you can.My first bird Greta [a caique] did the chomping thing. My breeder kept talking about the terrible twos. She was a year and a half and I thought ok as she turned into a monster we must be in them.I did make a ton of mistakes with her .She was the worst when I tried to put her back in her cage[she wanted to be with us]. So I know I needed to make a change [I did this] I take her out and first put her on her play stand for awhile then I give her a treat bowl. I give her some time .Then shes ready to see me .I let her climb all over me.Then she becomes very cuddily[gets on her back, lots of kisses] then when I return her to her cage I give her a couple sunflower seeds and shes great. No chomping the entire time.If I hadnt let her have her time on her play stand and tried to get her to be with me first she would have been trying to bite the crap out of me .[they want to play!!] As for the screaming thing[different bird] Our rescue lesser sulpher 2 would make this awful sound [like someone was stepping on her]when we left the room. She also made this very sweet chirping sound .When ever she did that I MADE A VERY BIG DEAL ABOUT IT. Belly liked to be told how pretty she was and now she just makes that sound [It may take awhile] :D
