My little Senegal Came Home Last Night

Postby Eurycerus » Tue Jul 03, 2012 11:31 am

Hello! I've been poking around on here for a while but I was waiting to formally introduce myself until I actually had a little buddy. I adopted her through craigslist and she is sixish. Only just recently was she given a name by the lady I got her from: Lola. The man who had her for five years never named her! Can you imagine that? I'm not sure if I'm sold on the name Lola but it's pretty good. She's been remarkably well behaved for being taken from her home and plopped right into mine. She does bite and is sadly clipped, but both of those things I'm sure will be remedied in time! I am looking forward to the decades we have together. <3

She's really quite sweet and made the cutest happy dance asking to come out. I started a tiny but of target training but she got bored quickly. It was pretty funny. I'll try again tomorrow!

Congradulations to the both of you. She will now have a good life and yours will be joyouse.

The biting is probably because she is clipped. Clipping really does a job on personality.

If she knows her name and you don't like it just use Lola with the name you choose. Like extending her name. When she is used to that drop the name Lola.

All my critters have names and nicknames. Rambo is Little Man. Myrtle is baby. My old terrier Bruce is Munchkin (he has short legs). Riddick is Pretty Boy and Ramey is Funny Face. Little red Chloe is Twinkie. Jasmine of course is Jazz.

Watch as her wings grow back and let us know how her personality changing on the way to her transformation.

I really hope you are right about the biting. I have been rewarding her good behavior and when she does a small bite I resist showing anything. However she bit me extremely hard this morning so I put her in her cage and left the room. then about thirty minutes ago I saw she wanted to go somewhere so I extended my arm. She bit my arm a tiny bit to test it and then bit me hard so I went to put her away. I must have gotten agitated and so she got frightened and bit my thumb very hard and refused to go in her cage. She then flapped and fell to the ground and bit my foot. She was scared and so was i. How am I supposed to handle it when she bites me super hard?

I can repost this elsewhere but it is kind of a response and I think you may be able to help me.

I'm trying hard to not be fearful because that upsets her but her angry/fearful bite is horrible. Also she can be very sweet and friendly so it's strange. It does seem like if she could fly she would feel much better and safer. the first time may have actually been a mistake and the second time I think she was afraid. It's still rather appalling when she latches on. Regardless I am rather upset because I am sure I did something to cause this and probably didn't handle the situation as well as I could have.

My worst bite came from a cockatiel named Rosie (Pit bull). She would not only bite but then shake her head to pull off a chunk. I did not get to stop her from doing that because I rehomed her with Curley who went back to his original home after 7 years of being with me. (I took him and Rambo in when their mommy could not care for them. She is at a point that she could take Curley back and he remembers her.)

You are doing the best with the biting. They are very intelligent and can learn the word no. All my critters know no and stay. Just like a little kid. Of course that doesn't mean they will always listen.
Sometimes Myrtle back talks when I tell her no. She is just lucky that it is in baby blabber and I don't know the exact words she is saying.

mya :corella: used to bite when she was clipped so flight will help.until then 30 minutes in the cage doesn't really work.ignoring a bite isn't walking away and giving a time out it's no reaction, step away to calm both of you down and go right back she may want to be left alone so by giving her a time out your teaching her to bite to get her way.watch her body language before the bite birds normally give some kind of warning to let you know they've had enough.mya will do a dance and charge before a bite.penny :gcc: will bounce or lunge and grumble, and some pin their eyes and fan out their tail watch the signs to avoid the bite.

I was afraid I might be reinforcing bad behavior... hopefully the damage isn't done. I will not put her on a time out then in her cage. however what do I do? Do I set her down and give it a moment and then try again?

no damage done your still getting to know eachother. the great thing about parrots is their intelligence which is also a downside. while your training her she is trying to train you too  mya bit me to the bone once, i did something really dumb,i went and cleaned/bandage my finger and came right back to let her know i was not mad or intimidated by her that was the only serious bite i got from her now when she's had enough she flies away or she'll grab my finger wth her foot or beak to remove it from her when she wants me to know she's done.
