Hello...

Postby nuttyone1 » Sat Jul 14, 2012 5:56 pm

Hi all, I,m new registering and new in keeping a bird. I have a 2yr old male amazon I inherited from a friend who through ill health can't care for him. He is already such a sweetheart. I have read a lot through the forum and basic training etc and its really a valuable source of info, however I already have a few questions... Rodney is fab and I have now had him 3 weeks. He always comes out of his cage and will happily take treats from me and let me scratch his head. I am still a little on the nervous side though, obviously of his beak as i have heard so many horror stories. He has nipped me once and it was like a sharp pinch this did not put me off...so q1 is how do i get over this fear...i love this bird already and want us to have a great partnership, q2 how quickly/slowly should i be progressing, he has only been here 3 weeks so i am not sure what is appropriate timing to move him on from taking a treat and having a scratch.. sorry its a bit long winded and hope you bear with me :amazon:

sounds like everything's going well so far. what did he do before the nip?that's what you have to watch for to avoid any future bites even though it doesn't sound as bad as my first :amazon: bite usually they get lighter not harder so i don't think you have anything to worry about as long as you get his signal when he wants to be left alone.

Thank you for the reply hun, this morning iwe have taken the first steps in clicker training and he seems ok. its going slowly as i only do it for about 10mins at a time (read in the forum not too overload him). Will continue this for a day or two and see how we get on. and I am proud of the fact that he put his beak around my finger today and i didnt pull away (again forum-lunging advice), he seemed to be tasting me :D will keep you posted on the progress we both make and please I am open to any suggestions for a perfect relationship with my :amazon:
