introducing another GW to my family

Postby Mitch » Thu Aug 09, 2012 5:00 am

I have a male (dna tested) Greenwing macaw. he turned 1 years old last month. I bought the macaw from a breeder who I trust totally with his ethics. The parents of my GW managed to have just one successful egg this year and thechick is doing well. If it's a female I will be bringing it home in October. Any ideas on what I should do before andafter she joins the family?

Well you need to seperate them for awhile [to make sure theres no illnesses] Then I would have them in the same room.[let them get used to each other].Start with a schedule for her out of the cage time you can realisticly do.Focas on getting her out of the cage and make a HUGE deal about putting her back with a treat :D .All the while giving your other Macaw TONS of attention so he doesnt get upset.I would have boundries established and her routine before I put them togther on a playstand and be right there. My Macaw is very easygoing and their smart animals .The training made a huge difference in what we can do with her.Dont get me wrong their buggers I had to teach her not to eat the blinds. :D You never know they might like each other the might not but they will love the companionship :D
