Hello everyone ^_^

Postby Ursibear » Thu Sep 06, 2012 11:04 am

I think it's time to introduce myself ^_^
My name is Ana and i live in Norway. I love animals, i have owned, taken care of, or babysat pretty much every kind of pet now; from spiders to a Newfoundlander dog, going through all kinds of reptiles, fish and cats.
But until a week ago, I had never owned or taken care of a parrot.
I met my red-bellied parrot, Sisu, at my job, in a gardening center that has an aviary and some Koi ponds as part of the decoration. A good soul rescued him from a small cage in a warehouse where she worked. When she got him out, Sisu had been mostly alone in his cage for 11 years.
She cuddled him and took care of him for about a year, but then her son developed a violent allergy and she had to give him away.
She thought our gardening center would be a good place for him to be, because there are budgerigars, lovebirds, cockatiels, a couple of australian parakeets and an african grey, but it turns out he was afraid of all of them and he spent most of his time sitting on his perch in the corner, or hiding in an empty flower pot.
So after a couple of days i decided to take him home. So now he's mine :D
Some of you already helped me with very good tips (thank you again!) and now, 5ish days later, he likes to mimic me and be scratched on his head and neck.
But i see the road to his recovery will be pretty long... maybe impossible to run. He still doesn't trust me, for example he won't let me take him out of the cage, or come out himself even when the door is open.
And he keeps biting me without warning until he draws blood. Who would have thought a thingy so small could do so much damage :D
So i have been reading up to learn more about his behavior and how to correct it... both of us would certainly love some advice if any of you has been through the same!

Welcome! There are quite a few people on here who have rescued severely neglected, terrified parrots that have become wonderful companions. There is a wide variety of help.

http://trainedparrot.com/Taming/ Take a peek at this. You're going to have to move slowly and be patient and over time I'm certain some trust will come.

I got mine at petco for two dollars. They are used for dogs and the like so I'm sure whatever large pet store you have over there carries them.

However you might not want to start with a clicker because of the loud, jarring noise. An already frightened parrot might not take too kindly.

If you find them in the same places in Norway as here in Sweden you can get them at most if not all petstores, even some stores carrying horse supplies here carry clickers as well. And welcome to the forum.

Hmmm. Sisu just leaped and bit my boyfriend under the eye for no reason at all.
My boyfriend was playing on the computer and the next thing i know... parrot hanging under the eye.
How does one avoid that kind of thing? >.<

You just have to be aware of where you are in proximity to the parrot. Don't allow the parrot near sensitive areas. I allowed my parrot within range of my boyfriend's face and he received a bite on the lip. So I learned to be more careful.

Body language can indicate when a bite's coming but I haven't found that super useful. When she does you can tell because she starts trying to bite you as you approach not because of any other body language indicators. She pins her eyes a lot because she's excited and happy not angry. All I've learned is to go slowly when approaching. I "ask" if she is in a friendly mood by patting her head and then having her step up. There by I approach from above, slowly but with intention. It gives me time to see if she's snappy, etc. With Nika either she's super pissed or not and in either case it's not going away anytime soon, so I guess that's helpful.

I just wish i could understand his body language :< he keeps vibrating his wings and puffing up his feathers and at the same time enjoying the cuddles he gets, so I'm really confused :(
My boyfriend is really pissed now. He has a really ugly bite that will most likely leave a scar and he grabbed the red-belly in a bit of a harsh way to get him away from his face so.... listening to two very pissed off boys right now <.<

Yeah my boyfriend definitely is still not quite on happy terms and it's been about a month or more. Unfortunately that's the tough part of parrots is many of them bite and it hurts! (Also pretty sure he has a scar too on his lip area as well as tossing her off, so same scenario practically) I would suggest letting your boyfriend cool off but I do think he should interact when he feels better. Have him provide treats for good behavior, such as stepping up, targeting, etc. My boyfriend does gives her treats through the bars and because Nika makes cute noises he has been quite charmed by sitting by her when she's in her cage and talking to her. They haven't interacted out of cage since then because she was territorial and jealous, so I'm trying to make everything positive.

As to puffing up and shaking and then settling the feathers back down, that's normal. They're just rearranging their feathers. :] That's normal and usually Nika does it when she's content. Unless your parrot keeps doing it, then he might be cold, or sick.
