Hola! Hi!!!! :D <<---Read Me

Postby TheGirons » Thu Sep 13, 2012 4:54 pm

Hello everyone and awesome forum! We are the Giron's.
We have had the honor of adopting a rescue Sun Conure, and this is our first bird.
So we are new to the bird family!(:
Our names: Margarita & Jose

& our awesome bird: MANGO! (love her colors)

We are looking forward to sharing and also reading everyone post's. We could really use some advice
on how to bond with Mango. Again, like I said, she was a rescue, so we have no idea what her previous owners did or did not do with her.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Welcome! I'm glad to hear that you rescued instead of bought a new baby. So many parrots need new homes. How old is your Mango?

Bonding takes time and patience. Here're some basics written up by Michael for how to initially handle your parrot: http://trainedparrot.com/Taming/

Thank you for replying! I believe Mango is 2 years old. & yes, we initially where trying to buy a cockatoo, but for several reasons we didn't. We then found out about Mango, and thought it was best we adopt her then buying a cockatoo.

Thank you for the article. I will definitely read it! I have trouble getting her out from her cage, she backs away from me, and wont get on my finger. :/ I try being patient everyday, but I know this may take some time. + she has plucking issues, when we got her, she had loads of feather plucked...

Aww poor baby. Well I have learned a wealth of knowledge on this site which if you take the time you will learn too!

Definitely be patient. You could start, as the article says, by target training with a chopstick with her inside the cage and giving treats for coming over. This builds a nice foundation of trust and she will associate delicious treats with you! She's been through a lot so it may take time. Definitely provide lots of toys and a balanced meal of veggies and pellets.

If you read some of his key articles and read some of the threads on the forum, it gives you a good idea of what to do for training, meal time, and plucking issues. Then you just have to be consistent, loving, and persevere.

Welcome to the forum :)
If you want to have a cockatoo later on, I'd get a rescue too. There are plenty of them needing a loving home, plus a hatchling will outlive you two by many, many years. (I'm not a cockatoo expert but i think they live around 90 years in captivity.)

sorry to hijack the thread, but ursi, do you have the problem with rescues in norway? just curiouse, since we doesn't really have that issue here, well we could use a rescue though but its not a massive problem and its mainly the small fellas that is still to some extent something parents buy for their children and then they grow tired of them, but most actually keep em as decorations in their cages, so not that many of them being listed either. like today I tried to make a search for macaws on the popular ad sites, and I could find 5 of them, 1 breeder pair, a baby, 2 of them about 5 years old and one hahns. so wouldnt say thats a horrible overflow of unwanted birds. as stated though I got curiouse about Norway due to your reply :)

And welcome to the forums TheGirons! and as mentioned targeting is a good place to start out, well clickerconditioning would prolly be the first thing I did.

We don't have a rescue here per se, but if you check finn.no you can see a massive amount of people getting rid of their animals because "their appartment is too small" or "i no longer have time for him" or "i like my dog much better"
If you ask me people that gets an animal and gets rid of them for no reason at all are douchebags (pardon my french). So no, no rescue :) I was planning on opening one for exotic animals when i can afford to buy my own house. Mostly because birds are too noisy and neighbors might complain. So wish me luck :D

P.D: Excuse me for hijacking the thread to answer Polarn's question :D

Welcome to the forum.

If she has issues being picked up out of her cage then don't do it. Open the door and let her come out. Her cage is her home and your hands are intruding. Once out and exersized she will step up. Once she investigates your home she will let you in hers.

Repect your bird and it's space.
