Lost My Baby Recently

Postby Paulie » Sat Oct 20, 2012 2:22 pm

I searched for a bird forum because I lost my blue-fronted amazon after a very sudden and unexpected illness. You know the story one day fine, the next day at death's door. Well she didn't make it and I'm now waiting for her ashes and the results of her lab tests. A gross necropsy showed she was bleeding internally around her stomach. If anyone experienced the same thing, I would appreciate knowing the cause. The vet didn't speculate. I knew something was wrong when she wasn't screaming "Ma!" or chattering at me when I came down the stairs that morning. She didn't answer when I called, but she has always done that (scaring the heck out of me) and there she was on her bottom sleeping perch very much in distress.

I have one cockatiel that I've had for 7 years. She was a handfed baby. I want to get another parrot, but I'm afraid of that parrot dying , even it is just from old age. It is just too heart-wrenching. I expected to have her for another 25 years and these past ones went by in a snap. I'm considering adopting - so surprised to find so many bird returned. How could you adopt a baby that bonds so closely and then give it up? I don't understand that. / I found this forum after watching Kili the senegal on Youtube. What a cutie!

Sorry I introduced with a sad tale, but who else would know what it feels like to lose your bird? No one else understands the grief and loss. It's "only" a bird after all. How far from the reality!

Welcome to the forums.

Sorry to hear about you loss, give yourself time to grieve and be kind to yourself. Its hard losing anything you love but there is always enough room in our hearts to love another just as much without squashing the love you had for your past ones. There may always be some fear but you will know when the time is right for you and whatever happens you will know that they had a good life with you which does make it worthwhile once the grief starts to fade a bit.

Thank you so much. All this happened on Tuesday morning. Right now I've got the "what ifs" and I keep expecting her to say something or hear her feathers ruffle or anything. I'll say or do something and then look at her cage expecting her to react. Her voice and antics were part of the fabric of the household. She was originally my son's for his 16th birthday but she bonded with me and so that was it. She had none of the biting or behavioral problems some birds have. I was very, very lucky. How could 25 years go by so fast? I'll have her ashes and I do look forward to the next baby I can enjoy. Thanks again for your words of encouragement. :greycockatiel: :amazon: Take care.
