Yay Bird People!

Postby charlieandkiwi » Mon Nov 19, 2012 2:14 pm

Hi There :hatched: . I am the mother of an adorable white eared conure (8 years old) and a green cheeked conure (4-5). Both of them are well behaved by most people's standards, although I am still working on a few things with the green cheek. I'm mostly just happy that I found a parrot forum. How are all you guys doing and who are you? :danicing:

BTW, my parrots are fully flighted. One winter my white eared conure, Charlie's, wings grew out and I just let it happen. His entire personality changed (he was already about 4 and had passed sexual maturity) when he started flying around for the first time. Now he's just like having a third room mate. He does whatever he wants while we're home, which generally consists of mobbing our hands for snuggles while we're trying to type, screaming and laughing at himself in a hole in the spare bedroom (I think he likes the acoustics), or shredding toilet paper roles we left sitting on the couch while scream laughing. His other favorite passtime is preening my boyfriend's neck while he plays video games or trying to attack my other bird, the green cheek, who is very friendly and passive towards him. That's the main problem we have in this house- Charlie is forever trying to find a way of beating up Kiwi. It would be dangerous, except Charlie is smaller than Kiwi and quickly learned that Kiwi can hold his own. Kiwi rarely tries to start anything with Charlie- he prefers to ignore him, which is a good thing because I think Kiwi could probably harm Charlie is he wasn't such a sweetie. In general, we go out of our way to constantly supervise them when they're out in the same room and to not let them get close to each other, as that inevitably ends with Charlie lunging at Kiwi and engaging in beak battle. He has gotten his foot bit several times.

Kiwi is my green cheek and I bought him off of craigslist. That was a mistake. He's come a long way since the first couples months where he constantly tried to attack my boyfriend, would try to bite me regularly, and screamed constantly. He's now a top-notch cuddler (I've visited with many birds and none are as cuddly as him). He's still cautious and is always hesitant to step up on my boyfriend's finger, but hasn't bit anyone in nearly a year. He's even become very good with strangers and is always excited to meet new people. I think his main issue about my boyfriend is that he's vying for my attention.

However, neither of my birds are unfriendly to either my boyfriend or I. I trained that out of them by making them step up on my boyfriend and be held for a couple seconds before being cuddled and held by me. I also make sure to randomly, verbally fawn on them while they're being held by Evan. They love that. It's like putting your arm around your lover while talking to another attractive person. If they stop getting attention the moment they talk or you talk to someone else, there will be problems. lol :swaying:

Hey there, welcome to the forum. I just joined a few days back myself, and I have a GCC too. Great to read about your two lovely pyrrhura conures. I've never met a white-eared conure myself, but I've seen pictures of them, and they are, like the green cheeks, beautiful little darlings. (As you can see, I am crazy about pyrrhuras too)

My GCC has been having some aggression issues these past six months that started right after he got spooked by roadwork noise outside my house. since then he's been biting both me and my husband, after being absolutely sweet to both of us for five years (his whole life). So I've been clicker training him and its helped a lot.

anyways see ya round the forum!

That's good that he's coming around. I'm sure if you give it time he will eventually be even better than he was before the incident.

Buying off of craigslist means you save him from a fate worse than death. No telling what he had been through before you got him. Kudos.

He only had one home before I got him and the woman spoiled him rotten. He basically ran the place and everyone around her lived in fear of him. It's a good thing he didn't end up with many of the other people on craigslist.
