Hey everyone, my name is Malissa and I have one rainbow Lorikeet and her name is nibbles, I got her when she was about 7 weeks and now she's about two months, well now she can fly and I really don't wanna get her wings cut, but I'm going away for a week and my sister is going to look after her while I'm gone, well she has a dog, but she can't come in where nibbles will be, but they have this light hanging that came out of it spot and if she lands on it she will probly die by a shock. I'm really lost I don't know what to do, so I was wondering if I should get them cut this time only and if they can cut them in a way where she can fly a little bit but not high and long distances
Please can anyone help me
Thank u so much for ur help :-)

to start off I would never cut a birds wings until it is at least 2 years of age, and... wouldnt it be easier to just remove the light and place some temporary lighting while the bird is there? I would basically prefer my bird to stay in a decent sized cage for a week rather than clipping it.

Yep I would prefer to keep mine shut away for 1 week rather than crippled for months.

Cant they keep the light switched off when the bird is out? Won't hurt to only let it out in daylight hours or get a couple of safe lamps.

Other thing is if the bird is clipped and the dog accidently gets in then it has no chance at all of escaping.

it seems that you don't want to clip but are cosnidering it as a last resort for safety --- well, I agree with what marie83 and polarn have said above: do not cut your bird's wings. It will cause permanent developmental damage . (see Michael (the forum owner's) post about this elsewhere in the forum.

maybe you could do the following instead- 1. tell your sister to make sure the dog is never in the same room as the bird, 2. take the precautions regarding the lights that the previous posters suggested 3. set your bird's cage up with fountain feeders for food and water so that the cage door does not need to be opened for basic care. 4. if you would like your sister or anyone else in your family to play with your bird and give it exercise, tell them to wheel the cage to a safe birdproofed room, with a LOCKING door, and there and ONLY there, should the bird be let out of the cage. during this time, the dog should be kept in another room with a door, to prevent accidents. if you think your sister and her family will not be able to take these measures, youre probably better off making sure the bird is not released from its cage during your absence.

also, I agree with marie83 above that keeping your bird flighted is the BEST way to protect it from the dog, in the event of an accident.
