New to The Forum

Postby Dave & Karen » Mon Dec 03, 2012 11:55 pm

Just wanted to introduce myself as I'm new to the forum and fairly new to bird ownership.
We got a blue pacific parrotlet last month and he's a blast to be around. So far at 6 months old he knows the step up very well and he flies right to my shoulder after I open the cage and walk away from it, but he'll also step up if I reach inside for him. He was very nippy when we brought him home but I worked with him and now he only nips if we do something he don't want us to do, otherwise, he's very tame already and he sleeps on my shoulder sometimes with his beak just in my ear... He's bitten my ears a few times before finding out my lmits I set for him and now he never bites my ears, but he wil gently "groom" them before cuddling himself to sleep... he's that tame... but yes, he does have a mean streak and can get pretty agressive at times but he's learning that's not acceptable.
We decided to leave him fully flighted and it works to our advantage since he can fly to and from his cage as he wishes, he loves the bay window in our bedroom, and he'll come and land on my shoulder when he wants attention. Yes... he bonded with me very quickly but he's slowly coming around with my wife and cuddled with her instead of me for the first time for almost an hour the other night.
We both enjoy his company and his antics... very playful indeed!! He's even speaking a few words very clearly and knows one tune that he'll sing when he thinks we're not listening to him.. still a closet talker but he knows about 10 words that I've caught him saying and actually just started telling me "pretty bird" last weekend.

This guy definitely has a ton of personality for his tiny size and we both love him a lot.

We also adopted a baby sun conure but we won't bring him home until he's fully weaned, and both birds have huge 32x20x53" cages with lots of toys... even tho the conure isn't here with us yet.

I've learned a lot from this place and other random reading on the net so I hope I can learn more now that I'm a member here.

We got him from a local breeder, he was hand fed but not completely hand raised as the breeder was in the process of moving and didn't get to spend a lot of time with him, needless to say it took some work to fully tame him but he's made excellent progress despite the fact that he wasn't handled as much as the breeder wanted to do.

So far, he knows 2 tricks and willingly does them when he sees I got food, he can say a few words clearly and he laughs at us from time to time... he is a total blast to be with

Parrots are found on all steamy and subtropical continents counting Australia and Oceania, South Asia, Southeast Asia, Central America, South America and Africa. Some Caribbean and Pacific islands are home to endemic species
