Marvin the parrotlet and I are new here :)

Postby Jenabee » Tue Dec 11, 2012 9:19 pm

Hi There!

After doing a lot of reading on Parrotlets and creeping this board for information I thought I'd join!

Marvin is an almost 2 year old Male Pacific Parrotlet. I started reading about them after my boyfriend and I decided to get a pet (he is severely allergic to cats). I wanted a bird that would come out of the cage and play, but most importantly I wanted to bond with the bird. From the reading I did a parrotlet seemed like the perfect choice.

Marvin came to us in a meant-to-be sort of way:

I began looking on line for breeders or birds to rescue. After about a week, I saw a picture of Marvin on Kijiji with the most sweet little first person greeting. The bird's owner lived in my old neighbourhood and we agreed to go and meet Marvin. If he was tame, we'd take him.

Marvin is loud. We have had to deal with this. We definitely heard him before we saw him. His owner was looking after him temporarily until the original owner ended up in jail (nice). Marvin was previously one of a pair, but the original owner (jailbird) fell asleep with them on her shoulder and accidentally smothered his friend :(. The woman who was watching him was very ill and had a dog. It was too much for her to keep both animals.

When Marvin came out of the cage, he hopped on my hand and I held him up saying "kiss kiss" . Right away, he leaned over and gave me a little kiss on my nose! My heart leapt out of my chest and we brought him home half an hour later.

Since then, Marvin has proved to be entertaining, challenging and the sweetest little Chicken ever (our nickname for him is "Chicken")! I've been working patiently to help him talk, but so far all he has learned is the wolf whistle. He mimics all noises and random sounds like zippers zipping, and keyboard keys clicking. He also quacks.

My SO and I have had to do lots of reading so learn more about Parrotlets in general. We've both found this forum very helpful. Hopefully it will continue to be a great resource where we can compare notes and share/swap info and cute stories about Marvin and all of your birds, too!

Thanks for having us!

Biiiiirrrdddddd ennvvvvvyyyyyyyy...............
If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands.
