New to group - question on clicker trainintg

Postby janine alice » Sun Jan 06, 2013 1:06 pm

Hi - My name is Janine. I really want to become proficient at clicker training. I attended Michael - The Parrot Wizard's workshop in Phoenix last year, but still need lots of practice!

I just inherited an Umbrella Cockatoo, a 5 y.o. male. He's sweet but not trained. He won't even step up. So far, I've been bribing him to get him to step up. I just started working with clicker training, and he will touch the stick, and follow it a bit, to get a click and treat.

I also have a five y.o. male Greater Jardines, who is very aggressive. He steps up on a stick for me, and takes a shower with me on his shower perch. But he will bite, and he will attack any other bird that gets within striking distance, so he can never be left alone with access to another bird. He is acrobatic and very pretty. He won't even touch the stick out of curiousity. I don't know how to start with him???

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Janine

Welcome to the forums.

With your jardines as long as he is not scared of the stick in any way its ok to touch his beak with it, then click and reward immediately. After a few times he will probably start coming to meet the stick.
