My new friend

Postby Jaunita » Wed Jan 09, 2013 7:14 am

Hi all I feel very overwhelmed at the moment, as I have my 16 week corella parrot for. Week now, not sure if I am doing things right, I leave the cage door open and it spend most of the time on the top play area and occasionally glides down to walk to carpet which it attacks, I have tried spending one on one time and have taught it to step up, down , and also to wave, it says hullo and other mumbling that I don't understand, I suppose you wondering why I call it it , I am waiting for the sex results, then I can name it, any way every night when I put it on my training perch , it will suddenly start flapping and screaming, I have to hold on to Perch as it will tip over, I try not to look at it , but during the day while its on the perch eats and catnaps, also we have a shower together in the morning it is still a bit skittish with it, it sit on shower perch, it has lots of chewing toys, which it chews on during the day . What I want to know is this right ,or must I spend more time one on one time,, what is happening when it flaps and screens like that, also if I touch it while doing this or just after it wants to bite other wise once I cover for the night it's dead quiet till I open in the morning , I so scared that I am doing something wrong and its going to start screening all the time, also that I'm not paying Attention, do they need cage time , and how long out of cage time please advise I feel out of my depth here, as I start back to work next week I work 2 days please just give advise on hoe to go about a daily routine

i think i may be the only other person on this forum with a western long bill also.bandit hes my corella he does the same things that you just described the wing flapping is normal they do that while playing or just exercising the wings, if hes biting that doesnt mean your doing something wrong he/she hasnt gotten use to you or the new environment it may take up to a few months b4 hes cool with everything.
they like to eat all kinds of veggies so mainly any fruits veggies and nuts you can think of and even though theyre beaks are big they cant get very goods bites in because theyre so long.leave some big and small toys at the bottom of the cage and one day youll notice him laying on his back playing its best to spend as much one on one time as possible.my bandit is about 1 yr old now hes very friendly and doesnt talk yet.

i just thought of the following, that you might want to think about in addition to priceyboys good advice regarding the corella's natural behaviors :

i think it would be helpful for you to take things a little more slowly with your new bird.

i would suggest you read Michael's blog post "THe Complete step by step guide for beginners" in its entirety. it walks you through the stages of bringing a bird home for the first time, what you should and shouldnt do, etc.

heres the link for the post: http://trainedparrot.com/Taming/

good luck !

Dear all
I really need help, I don't know if I have done something wrong, but my bird gets down the cage and won't go back on top when he steps up he clings onto my hand enfolding it so I can't get him it step onto the cage he holds on feet and mouth, he also can bite me quite bad if he gets hold of something in his mouth he growls and won't give it up, since he come down constantly I have to out him back, I have left him down and teach him tricks which he loves but I can't do this all day as I get tired 2 days a week I work all day he only gets out of the cage when my husband gets home after 5, but he allows him to scratch him head but when he stops he bites my husband won't touch him now so all his handling is up to me, he is just over 7 months, and I love him dearly, but I need to to change his behaviour so that we can enjoy each other again as before, he is very clever does tricks says quite a few words which he associates correctly to the action he is doing I have to resort now to locking him up for short periods to have a break, he is excellent at night when I close him up for the night he is quiet until I open him up in the morning please help someone

Hi,

The above help that's been given to you is good advice. All this sounds to me like normal behaviour for a new bird. It can take many months before a bird is completely settled. Maybe just slow things down a bit. He's gripping to the cage because he doesn't want to do something.

Please read Michael's guides they are useful for all birds... Maybe go right back to the beginning and go from there. However, most of this could be down to not being settled yet. That's not your fault necessarily, it just means you need to adpt things around it.
