He-e-ey!

Postby BirdHouse » Sun Jan 13, 2013 7:39 am

Hi everyone. After a couple years of scoping this place I'm finally joining! I currently have a female cockatiel who was given to me a year ago. She was left by someone at a bird specialty store (1-2-Tweet in FL) While the store owner was taking her out to show her to me, she flew around the store twice, then landed on me, clinging off the side of my shirt. He clipped her wings, trimmed her nails, and plopped her onto my hand where she immediately started preening . I found out he passed a few months later so it makes her that much more special to me. Her name is Lucy and she is a character! She's naturally huge for a cockatiel and the vet said she needs to lose weight also. I joke that she's cross-bred with an African Grey.

She's flighted so we've been doing "flight-laps" in the house for exercise and she loves it! When I send her off, by the time I get to her cage she's already hanging over the side of it waiting for me to "come get her". For some reason she thinks that I'm the only way she can fly (I'm the feather to her Dumbo lol). But I'm working on building her confidence. I don't think she's had much practice. She is the sweetest most loving thing ever when she's not in one of her "moods". I once watched a whole movie with her on my lap while I scratched her. She also likes to "talk" to a neighbor's rooster, which she's doing now on my shoulder lol!

I grew up with parrots (grandparents owned them) but they were either a one-person bird or didn't like kids. But I didn't care, I talked to them anyway and fed them through the bars of the cage. If anyone wanted to find me, they'd find me with the birds. I've only owned budgies (as a kid) and Lucy. I'm ready for my first "big girl bird" and after tons of research, fell in love with Eclectus parrots.I want to add a boy to this little all-girl family (I also have an 11 year old female Leopard Gecko). I prefer to re-home and will be meeting with a beautiful 3 year old boy tomorrow (I'm so excited as I've never seen an Eclectus in person before...they are rare around these parts). If I can't re-home I am on the waiting list at the very place I got Lucy, for a baby.

My dream is to get Lucy another female cockatiel friend, a male and female eclectus, a Galah cockatoo, and I would LOVE a greenwing macaw one day (but we'll have to see about that!). I plan on having only flighted birds and am working on making modifications to make escapes less likely. I've been staring at an area in my yard, between my house and the detached studio apartment, for three years and finally decided it has to be an enclosed courtyard/ free-flight play aviary for the birds. Now I have to just save the money, ha! Whoever said birds are inexpensive pets are kidding themselves! Anyway, as you've noticed I like to write books, which is something you'll probably be seeing from me here. Nice to finally get to say "hi" to everyone.

:eclectus: are beautiful in person. i was lucky enough to cuddle one, perfectly named romeo since he was kissing me the whole time,at mya's :corella: foster home. you do want to make sure he's going to be safe to have around your :greycockatiel: .when i adopted mya i had to be sure she had been with other birds. in her former home she was actually caged with another bird. i would advise you to request the :eclectus: not be clipped before you bring him home a flighted bird can irritate a clipped bird.
