Hello!

Postby Pru » Tue Jan 15, 2013 5:53 pm

Heya.

Im Alison, im 22 and live in hertfordhsire. I joined because in the future id love to own a parrot, however im aware i have absolutley no idea what goes into looking after them. Ive owned lots of ducks and chickens (i still have 1 little chicken called Squirt, who is THE best chicken in the world :D) but im sure their needs are far different from that of a parrot of any kind. (as much as i love Squirt, i have to admit shes not too bright, think it comes with her... you know.... being a chicken :P)

Im not in a rush to get a parrot. i want to learn as much as i can first and im currently not in a place where i could keep one anyway. when i eventually do, i also want to know that ive done everything right and that i know enough to get a healthy happy bird that has all the space and time it needs.

Welcome to the forums :) are u herts in the UK or another part of the world?

Good on you for wanting to learn as much as you can about parrots before getting one as they are a massive commitment and yes, totally different from chickens. Any questions just ask and have a good read through Michaels training blog (links at top and bottom of the forums).

Yea im in the uk. it'll probably be many years untill i can get one, so what better way to spend the time before hand than learning all i can about them :)

Untill i can i still have my little Squirt who chases the cats and sulks if she doesnt get her treats.

are there any parrot rescues/sanctuaries near you that might need volunteers? the best way to learn about parrots is up close and personal. rescues here always need people to help with the birds and the volunteers usually end up bonding with and adopting a bird. reading is a great start but having one scream in your ear or bite you is very different than hearing it from someone else. they can and will very quickly destroy your things. i shop at thrift stores or get deals from friends and family cause i know it will soon be chewed on. i do have nice things, mostly gifts from my mom, that have to be covered with blankets because i would feel horrible if something my mother gave as a gift was ruined.

Ive spent the past day or so reading and watching things all over the internet about parrots, and i think ive come to the conclusion that maybe a pair of budgies would be a good place to start when im in a cat free house. (my mum has 4 cats, all of which are VERY good hunters).
I had no idea they're so inteligent! (budgies that is), ive loved watching videos of people who have spent hours training them and they all look happy too.

I had a look around and there arent really any rescues near to me i could go to, however im moving to scotland in the next year and theres one up there that acctually has its own lodge for people to stay at for short periods of time, so i might see if i can go and volunteer for a couple of weeks or something.
