Proud new cinnamon green cheek owner!

Postby Kgreeny » Wed Jan 30, 2013 10:17 pm

Peppe the cinnamon green cheek just joined our family. He is the cutest, friendliest little thing. He (she?) is 6-8 months old according to the pet shop I adopted him from. I fell in love a month ago when I noticed he was missing 2 little nails on one hand. The pet shop is next to one of my favorite shops so I pop in there often to visit the birds and kitties. I made the trip hoping he was still there and sure enough, he was there standing on his head and hanging from one finger showing off for me. Stole my heart. I brought him home on Monday evening and he has settled in far better than I ever could have expected. Tuesday morning he was eating blueberries out of my hand and letting me rub his head and pet him no problem. He will even stand in my hand. Not perch. He is more interested in having his beak on my fingers. He is a little beaky, but I have done as I have read, and not reacted. He is very interested in my dark fingernail polish which I will have to remove. He has run his tongue all over my hands and arms. He even pulled out many hairs. Was he grooming me maybe? I just got a clicker today and plan on starting the clicker training tomorrow morning. I want to be able to bring him out of the cage so bad. Should i do it in the cage or say the the bathroom? should i let him out? his wings are clipped. I don't know how to handle this. He is so cute and sweet and gives "kisses" to me. He sticks his tongue out to me when I put my lips to him. I love him so much already. I have read horror stories of pet shop birds who are aggressive and bite. Thank God Peppe is friendly and sweet so far. He was so friendly to my sister and my boyfriend showing off and being silly. He's like a little monkey. I just need to tame down buying everything in the store for him!!! Any tips on being a first time "tame" bird mama? I want us to be successful in this. He lets me know when he's had enough of me.

Congratulations on your new bird. My GGC goes crazy for blueberries and strawberries are another favorite.
The beaky phase will pass, just keep doing what your doing but its less likely to turn into proper biting if you can allow his wings to grow back.
Either beginning training in the cage or in the bathroom, provided it is birdproofed, is fine- choose wherever has the least distractions. Once he is conditioned to the clicker there will be no stopping you, these guys learn so fast.

What does it mean when he bobs his head up and down?!?!? It's really cute but I can't figure out when and why he does it!? He let me hold him completely today and even got on my shoulder which I didn't let him do for long. He doesn't know step up step down and I don't trust him. He's a little cocky and I don't want him to think he's in charge. He was really mad when I took him off of my shoulder. So he would climb back up and I would take him back down. Bit me a few times. Did the clicker training with him and he was fine. I'll keep it up.

Welcome to the forum, to you and your GCC! :gcc: I have one too - they are really adorable birds.

There have been a number of posts recently on the forum about GCCs and their care. Try entering the words "GCC" or "green cheek" in the search box, and you'll see a lot of entries coming up. also, you may find this response that I wrote to another GCC owner helpful:

Also, there's a new thread in the Parrot species section called "the GCC appreciation thread" that I am sure you will find entertaining!

all the best with your :gcc:
