Hello from Canada

Postby snail » Sun Feb 10, 2013 1:32 pm

Hello everyone. About a year ago I met him at a friends house. We were instantly best friends. Last week I received him as a gift for my birthday. His name is Cosmo and he is a Meyer's parrot. He is 1 year old and full of personality. He bit me the first day and wouldn't let me touch him, but would step up onto my finger to be let on my shoulder. After a week now he loves to be scratched around the neck, has not bitten like he did the first day but still goes in for bites, I guess trying to warn me that he's not happy. He is not clipped, I have never owned a bird before so I thought it would be smart to join this forum. I have read lots of information about parrots, but am nervous that I am lacking common sense knowledge you would only know by owning birds. I have read most of the pages on trainedparrot, thats how I found out about this forum. So greetings to all and hopefully I can find some friends here.

welcome to the forum! :)

you are quite lucky that he's not clipped! please don't clip him. training is going to be a lot easier for you with a fully flighted bird.

sounds like youre on the right track with reading, and going over the trainedparrot.com blog. read esp the articles that talk about bringing a bird home for the first time, target training, etc.

all the best, and looking forward to hearing more about your :meyers: on the forum!

Thank you to all. My toque fell off of my head the other day with him on it. He didn't have a chance to get off in time and fell the the ground clunk. My heart started pounding. He was a little wobbly at first so I put my hand down to him and he jumped on. He hopped into his cage, started chirping and swung on his ladder. As if he was happy. I had a laugh after that because accidents happen, and he is a bird... birds fall down all the time. Odd that he enjoyed the experience though. As for clipping, I don't plan on it. I disagree with the idea. If my bird flies away its my own fault.

Accidents happen. We bird proofed our whole apartment and we have a baby parakeet who flies into everything! We have the blinds down and pillows everywhere and bedsheets over walls... he still falls down! Don't worry.

I have two birds Edmund the cockatiel (After Blackadder series) and Percy (also after Blackadder series)
