HI, i have questions.

Postby bioecologist » Tue Feb 12, 2013 4:37 pm

Hello. i have owned only one bird in the past, and he was a rescue cockatiel, and he was one of my best friends. about 2 years ago he ended up getting testicular cancer, he was about 23-25 years of age.
i now have 2 more that have fallen into my lap, one is a male one is a female, they are 5 and 8 respectively. I am about to pick up a macaw from someone who used to own a pet shop and couldn't find him a new home, so he now lives in a small room with little contact, so i feel like i should take him and give him as much as i possibly can, he is 25 and his name is Gulliver. i was wondering if the little birds would be safe around him if he was out of his cage when they were out of theirs. any one have any insight?
thanks in advance, :greycockatiel:

He might be ok around them but its a massive risk and one I wouldn't take, nor do I think anyone should. Also beware of birds landing on each others cages, many a bite, injury, limb loss or death has happened that way.

Btw, welcome to the forums, sorry to have to start off with that word of warning.

Firstly, well done on helping and rehoming these birds it's a great hing you're doing.

I honestly wouldn't even try it, the macaw may accidentally or intentionally hurt your birds. Also remember to quarantine our new bird from your existing cockatiels. If you let them out I would do it in a separate room (If possible). If not then you will have to be so careful like marie83 says even the cage won't necessarily protect them.

welcome to the forum :)

I agree with the posters above, that the tiels and the macaw should not be out at the same time.

yes, this is very important to keep in mind. birds are generally territorial about their cages. one way accidents like this can be prevented is by making sure that the macaw's cage top is covered by a thick quilt when the tiels are out, and to cover the tiel cage top with a folded quilt when the macaw is out. basically you want to arrange the quilt on the cage in such a way that the resident of the cage does not have access to the perching birds feet.

your birds are lucky to have a new home with you, all the best :)
