Hi Juanita,

sorry youre having these problems. i just wanted to reassure you that these problem behaviors can be corrected with training. But it will be an incremental process that will take some time and patience on your part.

I don't know that much about cockatoo and corella behavior in particular, and there are a bunch of people on this forum who would have more specific advice for you. i just wanted to share my thoughts on what i think is going on, so that you can plan your actions with your bird to reach a positive outcome.

I think it would be helpful for you to:

- read this thread, and follow forum member "cml" ;s advice :

viewtopic.php?f=18&t=9697

- allow your birds wings to grow out and work toward giving your bird a flighted lifestyle with lots of vigorous flight recall exercises daily. flight cures a lot of problem behaviors, including the biting, screaming and the frenzy youre talking about, which sounds like pent up energy.

vigorous daily flight is the ONLY effective way for a bird to expend its excess energy, so it can behave normally. no amount of toys or attention will work to substitute for what's lacking when a bird is clipped. a sensitive and intelligent bird like a corella needs the mental stimulation of flight to maintain its sanity.

unfortunately it takes a while for feathers to grow in, and it sounds like yours was clipped by whoever sold him before you brought him home. so it will require some patience on your part to wait until the feathers grow out. there is a method called "imping" suggested by forum member marie in the following thread, that might be an option for you to investigate:

viewtopic.php?f=18&t=9971

i strongly believe that you will be able to solve this problem - a lot of us on this forum have had terrible problems with their birds - including me - and we have overcome them! so dont lose heart, and continue to ask questions for guidance!

all the best !

hi jaunita

ive always had the same problem with my long bill bandit ive noticed that no matter how much attention they get and treats and training that all cockatoos will go into frenzies of flapping and screaming about 3 times a day the best thing i was able to do was reduce the amount of time he did it for and change the scream from his loud screaching dino screaming to the loud calling sound that they do.
give your bird things to entertain him like crab clips ad pegs and sticks the second he begins screaming and ignore the most irritating scream he makes and respond to whatever other sounds he makes.give treats that will last him a long time like peanut butter on a celery stick or wrab up some nut and seed in paper and let him find it.
you could give your bird a nut on a bolt and hell unscrew it will take a while but hell be entertained. or pinecones are great

all the cockatoos i know scream a few times during the day and i have a corella 3 pink n greys and my aunties sul crested does it to.dont try and go against the screaming work with it instead because they dont just do it for attention they scream like that for fun and also a clipped cockatoo can still fly about 10 metres so starts flight training hell love it and eventually start flying on his own to stay happy

Dear forum, hopefully someone can hep me, I'm vey sad, ill explain , I work 2dYs a week, usually my corella is Locked in the cage for the day, Wednesday last week was no exception, but when I came home to greet my baby, he scuttled over to the other side of the cage, shivering, my husband has recently been laid off from work and my son does not work on Wednesday, now when I saw both wings had a bit of dried blood on them I was very anxious I asked what had happened to him, they told me that my son felt sorry for him and let him out of the cage, anyway apparently they had to get to college and needed to get him in the cage, so he would not come to them and then he started trying to fly upwards and became very anxious after 20 min trying to get him my son said he was very stressed breathing fast ect, he picked him up from behind and then noticed that both wings were bleeding he had lost 2 blood feathers, he has now included me in this traumatic experience won't come to me, he eats, drinks well, poo the same as always but I must not put my hand anywhere near him, I have left the cage close talk to him give him treats, so eventually he came to me by himself so I opened the cage again so that he could come out, no matter how hard I tried he would not step up so I did not want him to stress again, so I took a small blanket and put it over him to take him back to the cage, this morning when he saw me he flaps all over the cage, I have never hurt him, to see him so stressed when I come near breaks my heart, I loved our cuddles, i miss it, but now he sees me as the enemy, my husband and son can't come near him here ally gets stressed, he does not like me to leave the room but also does not want me near, please tell me what to, he my first parrot, I don't know what to do, I just want him to trust me again, I presume putting the blanket on him scared him off again, I now will keep him locked up until I hear what to do, he plays in his cage ect but when I come near the cage he freaks out.

unless he's in a large aviary you can't keep your :corella: in a cage all day. cockatoo's need alot of exercise and mental stimulation. i agree with the previous post he needs to be flighted. when mya :corella: starts acting out i walk from room to room so she'll fly after me it keeps her busy and wears her out. we play games she likes knock knock and fetch. if you haven't gone to mytoos.com you should it helped me out alot before i decided to adopt her from a rescue.

I think you need to go back to the very beginning and start training again as though you just got him. Follow Michael's http://trainedparrot.com/Taming/ I really recommend the target training that Michael advocates. I recently had a major setback with my bird following a course of antibiotics that I had to administer to him (twice a day for five days having to catch him, hold him and force-feed him some yucky tasting medicine) after which he became frightened and aggressive. I went back to square one and started target training and it has really helped. I didn't use target training before because he was relatively tame and would step up with no problem before, but I found the target training worked wonders. Start off targeting around the cage, then when he's doing well with that then start to target him to step up. Use a hand held perch if that helps initially. Take it slow and don't push him.
And I know you want to let him out, of course, but if it results in him getting even more traumatised then it's not worth it. You need to begin to regain trust with him and if that takes him staying in the cage for a week or two while you while you work on the target training inside the cage, so be it. Chasing the bird around or restraining him after he's been traumatised is only going to make the recovery process longer.
Good luck with that! Be patient and take it slow....you'll get there

Re: Help my corella is biting his tail feathers

Postby Jaunita » Mon Sep 02, 2013 3:14 am

Dear all
Could you please help give me advise on how to stop my alpie from biting his feathers, he does not pluck them out he bites them off, I'm so upset as his wing feathers are growing nicely but he has no more tail feathers, all were bitten off half way, he is on a very good diet has a very large area to play he has lots of toys which i rotate once a week, he has a beaconed off sunroom which he has his cage and walks around to his heart content, if you read what happened to him that might be a problem as he still has not stepped on my arm since that time he his experience but does allow me to scratch his head give him a cotton wool bath

Hello Juanita - you need to start a new thread with this question, probably under 'Parrot Care', and explain the background so that people can give you a better answer.
