Moderator Wanted

Postby Michael » Wed Dec 16, 2009 11:04 am

Wanted:

-Dedicated forum member to serve as moderator
-Hours, flexible
-Preferably someone active daily

Responsibilities:

-Deleting spam messages
-Deleting spam user accounts
-Moving topics to correct sections if misplaced
-Promoting the parrot forum to new members
-Leading discussions by creating topics
-Promoting good forum etiquette by example

Requirements:

-Must be a parrot forum member in good standing
-Preference will be given to longer term, more active members with more posts
-Must have good knowledge of general forum functions and features
-Must be willing/able to assist new members with forum functions and issues

Benefits:

-Practically none. This is more of a volunteer job just to help than anything
-Unlimited post limit, unlimited PM box limit (surmising mods get more PMs)
-Listed as moderator in "The Team" page

Notice, I did not say that moderators have any authorization to "moderate" or control discussions. They may start them but I really don't want moderators getting involved in deleting discussions or posts. In 3 months or whatever it's been of operating this forum, I have never had to delete a topic or post (that wasn't spam/jokester) because the contents were inappropriate. That makes me so proud though, that we have such incredibly mature and respectful members. This definitely sets apart this forum from other forums. We have a fantastic contingent of members without the usual crazies/trolls. I don't want to jinx it but that's the advantage of being a small and focused group. We just have people who really love parrots so there is no room for immature kids.

We definitely can use some additional moderators. I'll only appoint them one at a time for the sake of having a training period and less confusion. So if more than one person applies, don't worry if you don't get chosen because we'll probably do this again once the first moderator learns how the system works and is established. We'll give preference to previous applicants on the next round. So this is not a contest or anything like that.

Basically I'm just looking for someone to help control the spam and promote good parrot discussion. Moderating/controlling discussions really is not part of the job because there is no need to. The members have been fantastic at moderating themselves and this is really a compliment to every member. This is how a forum should be.

So if you want to take on the grueling task of being a forum moderator, just make a post here why you think you'd be good/fair about it or you can PM me if you don't want to post publicly.

Thanks.

You know I already offered. I'd be happy to just delete spam. If there ever was a question of misconduct it would be brought to your attention and then you can make the decision.
I do work midnights so I can probably keep up with most of the late night spams.
I know I don't make a lot of posts but I have read every post!
I don't always agree with everything but people are entitled to their own opinons!

I'd like to be a moderator at the moment. I hate getting excited because every section has a new post and then I see that it's all spam... :(

Guess I'll just wait patiently for somebody to come on and clean it up ;)

I've been watching over the past few days......I'm amazed at the amount of spam postings.

Doesn't the forum software allow for time between posts, etc?

After having my own forum (not bird related) for nearly two years......it's a constant battle without moderators.......or flexible software to ward off spamming.......or more. :o

It's tough. We're trying not to hurt member usability by over controlling the forum from the software end. Then it just requires us to delete it whenever possible. Luckily, we check the forum several times daily and spam rarely occupies the forum for a period greater than a few hours. You will notice that we are very thorough and there is no spam in the archives because we always delete it as soon as we see it. The best advice I can give to members is to just ignore the spam, don't reply to it, don't report it. Just leave it and within 24 hours (but usually much sooner) we will delete it. Since the forum is still relatively small, I personally look at every single message on the forum so there is little chance that I will miss the spam. It's just a matter of when I have a chance to sign on.

I could sign up more moderators but I don't want members to feel that the forum is over moderated. On here, the only role of moderators is really as spam patrol.

Yes I agree with Michael. I think it is better for human to do this job, as human will know what a spam is and won't take a misplaced discussion as a spam. :) :senegal:

This topic is very old and we are not looking for any new moderators at this time. However, your insight is much appreciated and you are more than welcome to start new topics and promote discussions.
