Many times it seems like compassion and empathy are rather like common sense, the most uncommon thing there is.

I pay $75 in one place and $60 in the other for the initial exam, the follow up is cheaper. The blood work is around the same, around $100 unless I do only CBC that is cheaper (this is without bile acids which is $80) but I don't pay anything for medical waste, I do the sexing and chlamydia testing via internet ($40 or $50 - I think, it's been a while) and I've never had to have a feather cyst opened up by a vet so I don't know about that. I had one female canary (a rescue) that kept on getting them all the time (on the bend of her left wing) but I did the opening and cleaning myself each time -it's not really hard, it's like a pimple but inside you can have (sometimes you don't, it depends on how quick you catch it) pus surrounding a much thicker off-whitish matter and, under this, there is usually a hard thingie made out of the hardened keratin (which is the thick whitish stuff) that would have made the feather but never did.

There were a lot of dark-grey string-like things that I assumed were pieces of the feather.

We have a vet office here in eagle point or. That is run like a mash unit ,prices less than half of normal places and the place is always packed. They just don't have an avian specialist on staff and it's always so chaotic and litterly busting at the seems I don't think I would take the fids there anyway ,too stressful . But my hat is off to (all creatures )for providing really affordable and careing service. There are still kind vets that care more about the animals than the money. BW

If you're on Facebook, you can join Crazy Bird People chat. They raise money for vet bills for birds. Right now they are raising funds and having an auction to support a B+G Macaw named Jack. She is having breathing problems and has amassed vet bills around $3000 right now.

This group made funds available to me when my Amazon, Tanya, was admitted to the hospital. I turned out that I did not need the funds, but if Tanya had been in the hospital for weeks and weeks, at some point I may have needed them.

It's like insurance, I guess. You join the group, you give what you can when a bird needs help, and then if you need help, the group will do what it can.

Just be warned, the nature of helping sick birds is that there are a lot of sad stories. Right now I don't read the updates on hospitalized birds. I still can't do it without getting upset over Tanya.

Does anybody know if there is a pet insurance that covers birds? Because the ones that my vets use don't - they only do dogs and cats and only up to a certain age.

Sheesh! $109 for a visual physical that, in reality, tells them almost nothing?! Highway robbery! And, Abaxis is nice but, unless it's a super emergency or for a teeny tiny bird, I don't see the need to pay more for it. For the people who don't know what Abaxis is: it's a super advanced technology testing device that allows a doctor or a vet to perform a lot of tests on just two drops of blood and super fast. It was developed for use in space.

That's what they usually use. I get the results almost right away. They sometimes call before I even get home.
