Omg what an awful thing to have happened, I'm so sorry for you both and am really shocked! As everyone has said, you couldn't have done more.

Possibly Marie. Or he fell. Poor little thing, at least he didn't suffer. He was only vet checked 10 days before. If there was something wrong the vet would have seen it. There was nothing physically wrong . He was possibly fragile little one and he just went :-(

poor Percy :(

its possible that Edmund might be feeling a little depressed for not being able to hear Percy's chirping. in my own experience, whenever one bird passed away, the other bird/s that I had would be very sullen for a while, and not eat very much for about a day or so, because they could sense the absence.

all the best to you both and to Edmund during this difficult time.

Percy never really chirped that much but Edmund did feel something was wrong.

He seems happy enough but he's not been allowed in the bedroom until everything is throughly sterilized and cleaned. Our vet even got a bit teary because he couldn't find anything to suggest Percy has even been sick. Aside from a microfracture to his neck and him being slightly smaller and lighter there was absolutely nothing to suggest anything. He said if it was bacterial or viral it struck within six hours which meant there was still nothing we could do.

Whatever the case it was a very unusual or freak.

To be on the safe side we have his personal number and if anything at all seems wrong with Edmund he will come to our house or get him to the avian hospital. He said if nothing happens within 1-2 weeks we are probably safe. Edmund will have his check up after that as bringing him now is redundant.

It sounds like either a freak accident where he broke his neck or he just was born with a bad heart and it gave out suddenly. I understand how worried you must be about Edmund but it doesn't sound like it was anything contagious.

I can understand how you feel, though, because about 10 years ago I had a parrotlet who was only a few years old and I put him to bed one night and when I uncovered his cage in the morning he was dead on the bottom of the cage. The vet said he suffered cardiac arrest but couldn't identify the source (and in the past all his labs were normal).

I've never gotten over having him be perfectly fine the night before and then finding him like that in the morning. My favorite thing about a new day is seeing my birds again first thing but I always have a huge sense of dread and fear the worst when I uncover their cages due to what happened with my parrotlet.

Again I am so sorry about Percy and I know it's not much comfort but as you said, at least he went quickly.

Both your stories remind me so much of Tico, there was no warning either, just her dead with a broken neck at just under a year old. I can only assume it was night fright although there is an alternative theory. This happened many years ago but it still makes me sad and angry shes gone.

Just to update everyone, the cause of Percy's death has now been determined. He died of a sudden cardiac arrest, unfortunately the origin was not foun but it is believed it was something present at birth which neither the breeder or the exotic pet rescue was able to detect. There is nothing we could have done or anything preventative the vet could have detected

As compensation for this matter, as we decided we didn't want a straight replacement, they have paid our vet costs and the centre has now put us in contact with a different and reputable breeder who will provide us with a new cockatiel in 2 months time. We are going to visit them after Easter to look at the living conditions and to check out the breeding birds.

I feel better knowing at least why Percy passed away. It's helped with the grieving process.

I am so sorry! :( you and your partner did so well with him, he had a very good life.
If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands.
