I was at a pet store over the weekend, picking up some stuff, and I heard this ear shattering, persistent high-pitched screaming from the live bird section. I had to see who was making such a racket...the culprit sounded postively terrified, almost like it was being attacked. It turned out to be a young female Senegal, about three years old, according to the guy who was working. It was bought by the pet shop owner as half of a breeding pair and the male showed no interest in her, so the owner decided to put the bird in the shop for sale. $700. Ridiculous. Not only was she desperately upset but she was also upsetting the other birds. The guy said the bird has screamed almost nonstop since she was brought in, about a week ago. He said he told the owner of the shop but she is adamant that the bird stay there for sale.
I was beside myself. This bird was miserable and there's no way anybody is going to buy her. Not only that, but her constant screaming may make customers unfamiliar with the variety wary of Senegals in general, and they're such sweet, (relatively) quiet birds. Is this something I should report to the humane society, or a rescue? It's so cruel that they're keeping this bird on display. I'm concerned that she's going to literally scream herself to death. She probably isn't eating well if she's so distressed. The guy was sympathetic, but said the owner won't listen to reason. I was half-tempted to buy her myself, but I just spent a fortune on my new baby Sennie and all of his stuff, and my neighbor would kill me if she turned out to be a screamer even after she was brought home. What can I do????
