Whats happened is a friend went to collect something unrelated to birds on freecycle and came across this rather neglected chap with a very bad looking eye and your typical seed only diet. Apparently he did have a load of rather filthy looking toys and a decent sized cage but that was about all. She asked the owners about his eye and they said its been like that ages, they were quite willing to surrender him to her saying he does nothing but scream anyway and never comes out.
She then stopped by at a vet on her way home and was given antibiotics for the eye and solution to bathe it in twice a day. This way about a month ago and the eye has improved loads, it will never look normal though and the damage from the infection means the eye isn't being kept moist as well as it should so the 'tiel will need a replacement tear dropping into his eye twice a day (but preferably 3-4 times) for the rest of his life. There is a fairly high change of reinfection but as long as the eye drops are used correctly this will reduce the risk massively.
This poor bird is actually a right little character and has a really really trusting nature given he was handled very little. My friend has had no trouble with him screaming and administering the medications hasn't been a problem for her and I have also done it with minimal restraint. He is quite a scrawny looking thing but his appearence is improving by the day now.
My friend, who isn't a bird person, has grown very very attached to him over the past 2 months but fears she wont be able to keep him once her parents arrive back next week from their extended holiday/business trip as they are not animal lovers.
If it turns out my friend cannot keep him the bird can come with his cage/toys etc which aren't actually too bad but can be improved apon in time if needed. There is about 3 bottles of eye drops which should last at least a year and you dont need a prescription for them, can get them from boots and probably other chemists. He will also come with his seed and I will bag up some of my Harrisons for you as we are in the process of changing him over. I could possibly deliver him myself but i'm sorry to say that would probably have to be at my convenience although I would try to fit round you also rather than have you have to get an afternoon off work for example.
I will see if my friend can e-mail a couple of pictures of him. I so wish I could bring him home
