Jobs that are related to birds?

Postby hlasdf » Thu Apr 18, 2013 11:40 pm

I'm thinking of going into ornithology but...

1. It may be too late for me to do so(?)

2. I have no idea what kind of jobs there are in that field other than veterinary sciences. Anyone know of some?

Rescue
conservation
surveying
grooming (if you can deal with the fact you will probably be asked to trim wings)
Retail selling birdy products
behaviouralist/consultant
specilist in building aviaries
pet sitting/boarding
education (various directions you can take there)
zookeeper
nutritionalist
rehabilitator
animal technition
geneticist

Cant think of any more, some of those you will have to train and set up yourself, others are bloody hard to get in to, others will require you to deal with other animals too and may deal little with birds, at least initially but it might give you some ideas.

Wow, thanks! I never realized there were that many fields. I was actually thinking of helping out at a nearby dog grooming place that has two cockatiels, for community service hours. They're very unsocialized and one is very aggressive, while the other is deathly afraid. Maybe It'll help me get more experience with caring for birds while I'm at it!

I am about to start volunteering at my local zoo in an interactive lorikeet exhibit. Many zoos welcome volunteers in animal care...you might want to check out opportunities in your area to build your resume. Good luck finding your niche!
