Hi MonkeyKing,

So it may seem like we are all trying to talk you out of getting a parrot, and its true, that's what parrot owners do they spend lots and lots of time talking people out of getting parrots. And the reason for this is that we know what we are talking about. We know that parrots do NOT make "good pets" because of many reasons.

We are not trying to be mean or anything, we are just letting you know that its a bad plan.

People have an idea of cuddly birds that look pretty and are smart and do tricks. The fact of the matter is parrots are wild animals, and most of the time we spend with them is put towards ensuring that they are getting the correct nutrition, cleaning, training, and all of this takes time, hours and hours out of your day in fact.
Parrots are, with complete certainty, very loud, very messy, poop all over the place, destroy anything they come into contact with, require VERY specific nutrition, require TIME and lots of it, they take up LOTS of space, you said that you think a dog gets too big, well imagine having a huge cage taking up most of the room, and every bit of your house needs to be made safe the parrot, you will be cleaning poop and mess and food every single day for years and years and years. Imagine never sleeping late again or not being able to travel for long periods of time, imagine having to choose a home to live in for the next 30 years depending on the noise level.
It's like being the parent of a child, a child that requires constant upbringing and care, for longer than the 18 years!

And if after all this you are still hell bent on getting a parrot then what I suggest is read every single parrot book you can find, and then read some more, read the whole freakin internet of information on parrots, and then ask people who know about parrots if what you've read is relevant.
And then make a decision.

Rather get a fish, but even they require specialised care.

That's really good advice Dusty.
If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands.

Thanks!

I might have sounded a bit mean, but I spent literally months and months taking the time to make a decision on getting a parrot. In that time I read as much as I could, and spoke to my friends and family about their opinions on how I am going to accommodate a parrot in my life for the next 30 years atleast.

It was a big decision and I am still learning about how to take proper care of an exotic animal in my home.

:hatching: :gray: Bringing a new member into the family that will influence how you live your life is not something to be taken lightly.
