My two parakeets both do this. Iv taken it to be a sign that they want out of their cage. My cockatiel also does this, but only in front of his mirror. After he does his singing and strutting, he will clasp onto his perch and flaps like a mad man. They are all flighted and always have been.

Then again, hes quite fond of grabbing onto the retired ceiling fan and making it spin while he flaps in place. All the while shouting "Wheeww! Whewww!" with each pass.

I think my cockatiel is a redneck hillbilly incarnate...

:amazon: Mojo loves to hang upside down from the highest branch on his play stand and flap while whooping and hollering. His play stand is made from natural local branches so when he really gets going it bounces up and and down and he really has a blast. He also likes to 'flip' by lunging forward then flapping/flying his way back up. He is fully flighted and has been most of his life.

He also likes to go upside down hanging from his shower perch and flaps open his wings. He does this more to just play and get really drenched by the water.

Sadie did this when she was clipped. We let her grow her flight feathers out and have not clipped her ever again. She was a baby when she was clipped and I think started flying around 1 year old, so I'm still not sure if it's a baby thing or a clipped thing. Since flighted though, she has never exhibited this behavior again.

Here's a video from 2010 of her doing it (you have to click it I think):

Wish I could take the sound out, lol, I hate my voice!! hahah

Definitely have been away too long! I've thankfully switched employers so I should hopefully be able to stop by here more often! Mojo has been quite well. He's definitely been enjoying being outside with the nicer weather. Unfortunately my little Pele passed away suddenly just over a month ago though. I miss her like crazy and my house seems just a little too quiet without her excited conure screeches. Never thought I'd miss that high pitched scream as much as I do! Between Mojo not having to share my time with Pele, and me getting about an extra 10 hours back a week from not having to commute, I think Mojo has definitely been enjoying having more time with me. And of course I'm loving being able to spend more time with him and the rest of the family!

So in other words this new employer is more lenient to employees slacking off and playing on the internet

Sorry to hear about Pele, that's terrible. Glad Mogo is doing well though.

I wonder if it's something clipped parrots do but flighted ones don't bother? Does your bird flap in place and is it clipped or baby? Does anyone have an adult flighted parrot that flaps in place?

Rio does it every evening, she is clipped. Bla!

My Sennie hasn't done this up to now, but for the past week he's had his 'out of cage' time severely curtailed due to unavoidable circumstances (temporary), and he's been doing a lot of high speed flapping while on the floor of his cage. It's quite impressive and hummingbird like. I do feel bad for him but it won't be for long. He's got a decent size cage (a Montana Finka) but it's only in the last week while this has been going on that I've seen him fly in his cage too.

When he is out of his cage, twice a day but currently only for a short while, he just bursts out and flies around like a jet fighter!

The only ones that do this are the ones that are pinioned.

Tiki does this when she's having a tantrum. She grips her perch, flaps her wings fast, and squawks. She usually does this when she doesn't get her way. She is fully flighted.
