Traveling

Postby Munchy » Mon Jul 15, 2013 11:00 am

I have always wanted to go to another country, and now I get the chance. My husband gets to go to Russia to do some humanitarian work, and I get to tag along. I am so excited. However I am very worried about Disney. After some thought I think it would be best to board him at my vets, over having someone come into the home to care for him. I still need to find out what size cage he will need etc...
But he is so tiny and delicate I worry, a million things could go wrong no matter who keeps an eye on him. I'm just nervous, but I am sure it will all work out.

Traveling is SO wonderful! I am in Italy now and having a blast! I do not currently have a bird, though, I am adopting my baby upon my return in August.

How long are you going for?

I'm sure Disney will be fine

We'll be gone for about two weeks. This is a small vets office, they will have cats in the cages as well. I have to call them and find out what size cage Disney needs to be in. Who would have ever thought I would be leaving the US? Out of all our animals I worry about Disney the most. Just because he is so delicate, and small. But you are right, I am sure he will be fine.

Sounds like a great trip - I've never been to Russia myself.

Have you decided if you're going to board your bird (which would be my choice) or have someone care for Disney? Personally -- and this is just me -- but I'd go with vet boarding, UNLESS you can find someone you really, really trust and who has experience with birds...

I would NEVER board a bird in a place where they might have other birds or animals -too many risks and not enough personal attention no matter what they promise. A relative, friend or bird sitter are the best options.

And I know that we all think of them as delicate and fragile but they are not. Even little zebra finches are hardier than we think...

Tomorrow I'm leaving for Italy for three weeks, and we have Peanut all set up. She's staying at home with my dad, and we worked out a plan so he can work and she gets the attention she needs. We moved her downstairs from my room into the 'computer' room, where she is now on my shoulder. I'm not very concerned for her- she's been around my dad and in the computer room many times before.

And yeah, if you're worried about the wires and stuff, back when we had sugar gliders we had to baby-proof them. They still are, and Peanut doesn't like the ground anyway unless there's a carpet.

Have fun on your trip to Russia! Italy is the first time I've been out of the country since I was 4.

Well the vets no longer board birds. I am disappointed, but on the other hand maybe it is for the best. I have heard great things about their bird vet, but I was concerned he'd be in cages as would cats and small dogs etc...,

I have made up my mind that he should be in his own cage in his own home. We will have to get a pet sitter. I am concerned about him not getting out of the cage. When he sees me coming to give him more food etc... he makes his way to the door asap.

We also have two old cats. One is 19 years and the other is a mystery, we've had her for about 14 years and she acts older. I'd be afraid Disney would get out of the cage and the person couldn't get him back in. Or if Disney bit their finger and they shook him off. So many things to go wrong.

My only other option is a pet store that boards birds. They have a Macaw and a rare amazon that live in the store. But again my fears are the same what if Disney gets out? He is flighted and could potentially fly out. So He will be staying in his own home. I'll just have to try and find the right person to care for our home pets.

Years ago we had a woman who said she was a pet sitter. She was supposed to feed the cats in the morning, well we came home a day early and the cats had not been fed. I could see her walking up the driveway about 5:30 pm, cocking her head looking in the window to see if we were home. We were, and I didn't want to use her again, but my husband didn't care. We did use her one more time but that was it.

It's amazing how fast this trip is coming on us, so we need to get it figured out.
