i think it very much depends on the individual bird, my :irn: does not talk but when she was younger someone came to my house and throught she said hello once.
She wolf wistles an imitates the microwave and crows  and shes very shy and does lots her noises when i am out of the room.

To me talking is not al that important i like her personality.

I don't know about IRNs but I do know that people who teach budgies and such to say phrases for advertisement reasons quite often use a technique of darkening the room and then only light up the area where they and the bird are. This is to get rid of other distractions in the room making the bird focus on the person, some birds, especially the bigger ones focus on you no matter what but still may never speak. Just as I suspect this method is most likely only good if you already have a talker to speed up at wich rate they will pick up words.

Personally I don't really try to encourage talking but I don't mind that they do, mines knows a few words but it is quite unclear and their imitations of other sounds is way better than their ability to talk.

Pajarita, I don't want to sound mean but have you watched Bowie the lutino IRN on Youtube? He has probably one of the best parrot voices I've heard of. Here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KNxPwRm3 ... 5huaO2smAg

Peanut talks, but we can't understand her. My mom said that she sounds like one of those old radios where it's all static-y and you just hear bits and pieces of words.

Yes, I have seen him. But I've also seen Disco, the budgie who talks up a storm and I don't know any other budgie which talks like that. It seems to me that IRNs might be like budgies, a few of them talk a lot while all the others don't (I know quite a number of people who own IRN's -some of them multiples- and none of them talk at all). I don't know how they do it with IRNs but, with budgies, it needs to be a male (they are hard-wired to learn the hen's 'dialect' in order to woo her), the bird has to be alone (Disco lives alone with three humans) and to have been taught since infancy. But, I'll be honest with you, although I enjoy Disco's chatter, it always breaks my heart when I watch the videos because all I can think about is how lonely that little bird must be... budgies are so very flock-oriented that having a single one seems quite cruel to me.

My parrot doesn't talk and I'm fine with it, I love him anyway!
