The goal should be to make selling live animals in stores forbidden by law and every single breeder to be licensed/inspected. Some cities have already taken steps toward this goal but it should be a Federal law.

Was in a petSomething a few days back with someone (I never go to those myself) and we saw a typical tank full of budgies. What was not so typical was that every single one was staying completely still and silent. No jumping, no playing, no preening, no vocalizing. Absolutely nothing! This was between 3-5PM so not even a crazy time. They were all sleeping or standing on the bottom and that's it. Something seemed terribly wrong.

Also they did not have a single toy. All the toys are hung off the ceiling where it is absolutely impossible to reach. And there was an unchewed strand of millet spray hanging the same way. What the heck!?

Drive by at night. I bet the cages are fully lit up. That's how they are here. 24 hours of crazy making florescent light for the birds. Doesn't our government do this in Guantanamo Bay?

So true but that wont happen until the masses start stamping their feet. Even improvement wont happen until people do and don't buy out of pity.

It's not only the not buying of animals from these stores, it's the not buying anything from them and to become an animal rights activist (signing petitions, posting to FB, etc). We have accomplished A LOT in the past few years and, if everybody who loves animals gets on board, we can accomplish even more.

I had to reply to this again because I visited a new-to-me small pet store. Clean place I think. Plus it will be easy to pick up work animal supplies.

Anyway, I go to look around and the parakeets are chirping away in the back part of the store away from everything else...a wall seperated their big area from the rest of the store with other supplies. I go back there to look at them in the far corner and they are playing, chatting, fighting over toys etc. Just a happy bunch! They didn't really notice me and so I leaned down and said, "Hi birds" pretty softly.

They all stopped and looked at me and every one of them stopped chirping. There must have been at least 20 in that big cage as silent as they could be...all staring back at me like I crashed their party and I was not invited. Lol weirdest moment ever! But it didn't last long. They started right back up with their talking. But every time I spoke to them, they stopped again. They were ok and even came over to see me as long as I didn't say a word. Lol

Maybe a happier story then yours, but something I had never seen before for sure!

Also, I did get ahold of Emmi's supplier. The lady was unsure if they supplied birds to that PetSmart, but they do supply the small animals to them. She wrote down the info and agreed it needed to be fixed and can't go on. She said she could see what they could do on their end. Pretty nice since it's not their store or responcibility. She invited me to call back and follow up if I wanted, but I have not had the time yet. I will soon. It may not be a total fix, but if conditions are a little bit better, it does not hurt.

An improvement is an improvement, even if it's a small one. Besides, it's good for them to notice that people are better-informed now and that they are paying attention.
