Yes, no to poisons, definitely. I am like the Amish (okay, not really... I like heavy metal music, 'k?) but I TRY to make my own jams, am totally going to can my fruits, I make syrups, and grow a lot of my own produce. NOTHING is sprayed. EVER. I made a nice rose syrup and do you think I want to drink pesticides in my rose syrup cocktail? Um no.

What's great for the environment, and BEES, is having a garden. Plant lemon balm around your berry bushes/fruit trees. Never, ever spray. And totally, one day I am getting my own hive of bees.

I don't mind spiders, actually... they're natural bug killers but sorry man, when it comes to ANTS in my house I am busting out the Diatomaceous earth. It's natural. But you don't want to use too much of it because of the lung/breathing it concerns.

With my :greycockatiel: , if there was a bug, he'd see it before us and we would only be alerted to its existence when he came and tried to give us kisses with bug guts all over his beak

Also, I love the idea of sustainable living! If I spot anything recyclable in our trash, whoever was responsible gets an earful. We also have a vegetable garden and compost pile going in our backyard, with plans to buy some fruit trees next year and expand the garden next year! It's really nice to be able to harvest plants and the like from your own garden knowing they're free from pesticides. :)

Put a little Vaseline on the legs of the cage. Ants will not cross it. I do this on the trunk of my fig trees to keep ants out.

Rambo taught Myrtle to throw seeds at the dogs when they go by so I do have a little problem with ants. I use outdoor Tarra on plastic lids under the big cages that reach the floor.

I also use it where I know ants are coming in. They are always finding their way into the main bathroom though I can't figure out why. I tape indoor Tarra cut side up to the back of my laundry hamper. It is out of the way of critters and ready when the next ant finds it's way in.

I think vinegar has too strong a smell to use near birds.

If the ants are targeting the bathroom, it is likely to be a water supply for them. It doesn't take much to supply a whole colony of them, just a drop or two.

I guessed that is what they are coming for. In this dry weather I even keep a Tarra in the window between the glass and screen over the kitchen sink.

Grits! Leave a small pile for them. Ants can't digest them but they'll eat them anyway. And not only eat them, they take them back to the nest. You take care of the ants without chemicals and without risking your bird's health.
