You are right that, in an emergency, anything that one can get into a bird is good and unsweetened apple sauce is very good for this because the natural sugar gives them energy and it has a high water content so it keeps the bird hydrated but the only time that this is iffy is when there is a yeast infection in the crop because the same stuff that makes it good (moisture and sugar) promote yeast growth. And, in this little guy's case, the fact that he had not been eating well for days is a big worry. Little birds have a very high metabolism and babies can be touch and go, especially when their immune system is compromised so feeding him rich and nutritious food is what's needed. Personally, if I were the OP, I would leave that baby at the vet for round the clock care and proper hand-feeding... at least for a couple of days.
