I wasn't meaning to suggest that the bird just be fed applesauce or the veggie juice, but I was trying to get something in his system to help keep up his strength until you got to this to give better info, Pajarita. You are my main go to for things like this and I really learn a lot, thanks.

You are right that, in an emergency, anything that one can get into a bird is good and unsweetened apple sauce is very good for this because the natural sugar gives them energy and it has a high water content so it keeps the bird hydrated but the only time that this is iffy is when there is a yeast infection in the crop because the same stuff that makes it good (moisture and sugar) promote yeast growth. And, in this little guy's case, the fact that he had not been eating well for days is a big worry. Little birds have a very high metabolism and babies can be touch and go, especially when their immune system is compromised so feeding him rich and nutritious food is what's needed. Personally, if I were the OP, I would leave that baby at the vet for round the clock care and proper hand-feeding... at least for a couple of days.

Would I have been better by suggesting oatmeal?
I ruled out rice as it is a starch and I didn't think it would be a good option.

Good to know about no applesauce with yeast infections. Thanks, Pajarita!

Yes, oatmeal and even rice would have been better (they are starches and will become sugar but it will be done lower in the digestive tract and not in the crop which is, most likely, where the yeast infection is -aka sour crop) but, as opposed as I am to commercial food, in this particular case, a handfeeding formula is the right way to go because you need to get some nutrient dense food into him pronto.
