I think it is important to explain the hardship sometimes experienced with these birds, but you should also understand that there are more people capable of dealing with the hardship then just you. I just think that instead of shutting the new people down with comments like this is not the bird for you etc you could be nicer still warn them of the hardship but be like "these birds can be difficult and time consuming and if you decide these birds are for you then welcome and let us help you." You shut people out who have decided these birds are for them and are going to get them no matter what you say (they don't know you after all) and if they have troubles or questions later with their bird they will not come here because of the jaded attitudes and in the long run this hurts the birds and yes that bird might go to a rescue or whatever. This message board is a good resource for new bird owners to use and jaded people will send them away and they will still get the bird or have the bird already and wont use this nice resource for help when its needed. How many people come to this forum new and then get told nope this is not the bird for you and then never come back. How many of those people do you think got the bird anyways? Im willing to bet most of them did, and yes some of them might not be ready for the responsibility, but I dont think we should be here to judge that. We as a group should except the fact we are not going to change their mind and help them with the choice they made so that the best can come out of it for the bird.

Here's the thing. I knew this place was full of cynics beforehand, and I knew how they'd act. Sooooo, to save myself the headache, I bought the bird first, asked questions later. You can't fix people who think they know everything. But, you can manipulate them. Even though I'm a scrub bird owner, I came in with authority and said "look, I have this bird, I don't want to sit on it by accident. What should I do to keep it alive?" This harbored tons of wonderful responses.

So then why be so cynical your self? Clearly I wasnt scared off by the jadedness, as I said my bird will be at my house tomorrow night. But we should welcome those people whether they have the bird in hand yet or not. It will probably happen regardless of what we say so why can't we all just then help them learn how to care for their bird. It sounds like from your post above that you were once very much new yourself and didnt ask questions first which most would think would be the smart thing to do. It clearly worked for you so far so not dogging your choice just saying we shouldnt dog on those who choose to ask questions first.

Mostly because I'm a nihilist. AAAAAAANYWAY, we have to try scare tactics. I'd rather us come off as a bunch of elitist douches so that one out of every couple of dozen people go "Oh, cockatoos sound hard, maybe I should reconsider this" then have us welcome every white trash redneck who feels fancy because he has a red eclectus.

Natalie ;

You have some very good points, things that we should , indeed, look at more closely. We are not trying to scare you off and any suggestions by the older members of this forum that you might want to consider a different species of bird, were given to protect the bird first and fore most. Also to try to get you to allow yourself to gain more experience, but in any case we will do what ever we can to help you and your bird to have a long and rewarding relationship. Yes, we do have our faults but We are all about the birds, it is what we care about. We would much rather give you the downside of parrot ownership so that you can see what you may have to contend with if you choose a specific species of bird, than to have you come back wanting to know why no one told you about this side of the bird that you can no longer deal with and are having to place in a rescue. It is a difficult place to be in and there are no all inclusive right ways to approach this except from the point of trying to protect the bird from this.

NiCrosis ;

You are welcome to your opinions about the rest of us, it really doesn't bother me at all. I will tell you that from my part in this that you would have gotten exactly the same responses from me. Really a moot point as there is no way to prove this.
If you look through all of my posts you will never find even one instance of me telling anyone to get a different species of bird or ever even suggesting it at all. I am not qualified to do this, and so I simply do not.
You are welcome to offer any opinion that you want to offer, I for one would prefer that when you are giving your opinion that you put it in the aspect of ( my opinion, I think) personal pronouns as opposed to plural pronouns such as we, our and us.
Yes I have used the plural pronouns but only when I know for a fact that it represents a majority consensus and I try really hard not to abuse that priviledge. but I, will in the interests of fairness, since I am asking you to refrain from the we, our and us responses, also refrain from there use. All my opinions will simply be my, mine and I.

Natalie, I wish you and your bird the best. You sound young and inexperienced (two things that don't go well with grays) but you seem to be trying so time will tell. Nicross, if what you wrote is truly part and parcel of your life philosophy, I'm afraid you might not do well as a parrot owner -well, let me rephrase that, you will do well, your birds might not- so I hope you were just venting steam or trying to be funny.
