Lilly is Gone

Postby Matt Alyk » Thu Oct 16, 2014 5:14 pm

Well, my Goffins cockatoo Lilly had to go back to the shelter she came from. Everything was going fine, until we found out my dog, Henry was allergic to the dander. His eyes were red and he was constantly itching them and sneezing. He was also throwing up almost daily. Lilly had been with us for three months and knew the people she was going back to. Henry, on the other hand, didn't have anyone to go back to, only new people he didn't know. So, we brought Lilly back and she was happy to see the caretakers at the shelter again. I miss her, but she is happy and didn't really go through any stress on the way back, so everything turned out good.

Did the vet tell you that the dog's red eyes were an allergy? Because bird dander causes respiratory allergies (sneezing, asthma, etc) but, as far as I know, it doesn't irritate eyes (well, the eyes might get teary and red from sneezing) and vomiting is never due to a contact allergy, it's always dietary.

His eyes are probably red from sneezing. I know the vomiting is not due to allergies. He would run to the cage and stick his head inside and eat the stuff. He would do the same to the floor. Well, his eyes got better like two days after she left. He is still itching them though. I'm sad she left, but leaving wasn't stressful for her. She was calm the whole ride, relaxed even. She was very happy to see the caregivers again as she was very happy to see them. The fact she is happy is all I care about, its just sad she is gone.

I'll also mention my mom had a hard time breathing and my brother got a sinus infection. This was with regular misting and bathing.

Dander wouldn't have cause the sinus infection, either. I have COPD from chronic asthma but all I have to do is use my preventive inhaler twice a day and keep the air purifiers running 24/7 and I don't have a problem with dander even though I have two cockatoos, two grays and several tiels.

Really? Now I'm confused. I did recall my dad say that we had 12 weeks before we had to give her a vet check up so he took her back before the twelve weeks, I put that aside thinking he was joking. And my brother never really went to the doctor, he just said he had a sinus infection based on symptoms on a health webpage. But my dog stopped sneezing and his eyes got better after she left. This is confusing...

Sweetheart, if your brother had had a sinus infection, he would have needed prescription antibiotics to clear it up.

Okay, I just asked my dad and looks like my mom AND dog were having dander related allergies. The red around the eyes was from him getting feathers in his eyes or something. The "sinus infection" was complety unrelated.

Sweetheart, how in the world would a dog get a feather in his eye on a daily basis? But it doesn't matter, Lily is most likely better off in the rescue.

Well, looks like Lilly is about to be adopted. I'm happy because she can finally have a permanent home, but I never got to go back to the shelter to visit her.
