books/reports

Postby sgtpepper » Sun Mar 15, 2015 5:43 am

Hello everybody,

I am in search of avian books, reports, any useful, fairly up to date, good reads.

I am interested in things like diet, anatomy , physiology

I haven't been able to find too much information on the African Grey's diet in the wild, so any input on that would be also highly appreciated:)

I wish you better luck with discovering the Greys natural diet than I have had during the past two years. So far the best that I can get on this topic is that they like the fruit from the African oil palm, occasionally snails, seeds, nuts, fruits, berries and flowers. This is the greatest depth that I have found anywhere.
Probably the best source of information for the rest of your list would be the Merck Veterinary Manual. Other than that you will probably have to do what I do and that is to keep hunting as there is new information about parrots every month.
Haven't heard much from you lately, how is everyone doing? Could I get an update and pictures anytime soon? Would really love to hear more from you.

It's like Wolf said, you can't get any specifics on their wild diet, everybody just mentions leaves, blossoms, fruits, etc. but, if you do a search on the type of plants and trees that are found in their natural habitat, you get a better idea (See here: http://animaldiversity.org/accounts/Psi ... erithacus/
http://www.arkive.org/african-grey-parr ... erithacus/) - not that it's going to help you much because, at least here in the States, we don't have access to any mangrove forest or savanna woodland plants!

As to medical (physiology, etc), I doubt there are any books that talk only about African grays but you can always get the avian medicine books (several of those, do a search and take your pick).
