I am not fond of the term beginner bird. It sound like a temporary to be replaced with a better model.

They are a good first bird that will be just as much fun to own as a larger bird. Connor :gcc: is an absolute sweet heart. I wouldn't trade him for any other bird.

Liz is right, there is no such thing as a 'beginner's bird' because all of them require knowledge of the physiological and emotional needs of that particular species as well as devotion, time, commitment, work, money, etc. I love GCCs and I think that, with good care (solar schedule, proper diet, etc), they can be great companion birds but they are almost as needy as a cockatoo and require hours of been on you or they turn bitey as they become older (and that's the number one reason why these birds are given up after a few years).

I believe in beginner birds about the same as I believe in beginner babies.
We are speaking of a living being that is self aware, intelligent and with emotional needs that are as deep or deeper than any that a human has. They are so complex that individual differences can be larger than species differences.
I would think that your time and efforts would be better spent on deciding what you think you are looking for in a bird as well as in what you have to offer the bird in terms of answering its needs. And then researching the birds for the ones that will generally meet your requirements as well as matching what you have to offer. No amount of research or second hand information can possibly prepare you for the realities of keeping a bird, but it can help. I would then visit and volunteer at a bird rescue to gain valuable hands on knowledge and experience and you are very likely to find a suitable bird that also chooses you at such a place.
