How birds hear

Postby Pajarita » Mon Jun 29, 2015 9:42 am

Luckily for us, they used budgies for this study - and they found that they can discern different sounds better than us - no big surprise if you ask me, they can also not only see better but figure out what they are seeing much faster than us because their path from the eyes to the brain follows a shortcut compared to ours.

This was fascinating to me - Quigley is so incredibly tuned into any noises caused by me. In the morning, he will sometimes be quiet for a short while after my husband leaves while I'm still in bed (he calls and calls from the second he wakes up until the time husband leaves...)... But as SOON as he hears me so much as sigh or crinkle a sheet (and I'm talking VERY VERY quiet noises, my door pulled shut, AND he has a radio on in his room, husband puts it on before he leaves)... He is screaming for me. It's so obvious to me that not only is the sensitivity of his hearing incredible, he can discern sounds in a way we can't. Really fascinating article.

Yes, birds are fascinating animals... so very different from mammals. We actually never knew much about them -we thought we did but we are now realizing we really did not- and now, every single thing we study about them, we find something completely amazing about it.
