Pajarita wrote:Well, supposedly (and I say supposedly because, as far as I know, all the blood tests value ranges have been determined from pet birds and not from wild ones so they are iffy at best) normal cholesterol goes from 50 to 350 but this covers ALL species so, personally (and I am not a vet or had any formal training), I would say that 356 is pretty high for an amazon (I am basing this on the fact that they are supposed to eat less fat and protein than other species).

I did find the Bile Acid levels on the test done in June. 255.6. That's super high. Over the range that the test can even accurately measure.

The vet today said the the cholesterol of 356 was super high, also.
Blood was drawn, we should have some results tomorrow.

Yes, bad diet is a killer for zons... no doubt about it! But, Navre, don't be discouraged if the results are not good yet. It takes time to undo years of damage...

A couple videos of Bucca. He is a wild caught Moluccan, so that makes him over 30, at least. He is kind of intimidating and unpredictable. He usually doesn't come out when I'm cleaning his cage, but he did this week.

He seems to want affection, but it's hard to trust him. Lately I've been seeing a lot more personality in him. I'd like to work with him more; I'd also like to keep all my fingers.

It is always better to know what you are dealing with instead of guessing. With things bile acids and cholesterol running as high as they are you will just have to be very careful with her diet as well as getting her to exercise a bit. I know that with her other conditions that the exercise part is going to be difficult at best. You can only do the best that you can.

Well part of Bucca's problem is that he is screwed up, he is righted handed instead of left handed like most parrots! Yes, he does seem to want the attention and also appears to be a bit nippy as well.

I posted this before, but there was something wrong with that link.

All the Greys are gone now, except the Timnah who is mad at me because I put him in a better cage.

The plucked DYH, Charlie, is gone, too. He is doing well in his new home.

The other DYH is Maya, back when she still loved me. She gave me more scars in 2 minutes than all other animals have been able to over 50 years, combined. She's so beautiful, though. She needs to get out of the rescue.

Marvin is my buddy. He's doing okay. Still won't touch vegetables or even pellets that aren't pretty colors. His weight is now correct for a Mealy, even though I think he's fat.

Taco is still here. He can give an M2 or U2 a run for noise and chewing.

Well, he could be as young as 23 years old, actually, because the ban went on in 1992. And yes, he does want attention, poor thing. If I may make a suggestion? Cockatoos react very well to baby talk -not so much words not pronounced the right way but a high pitch in a soft singsong and lots and lots and lots of praise. You also need to teach him a word or phrase for scritches so you, guys, can ask permission from him because approaching him with a hand up in the air and hesitating is not going to do it for him in the long term.

I always feel so bad for the birds in rescues.... But, on the other hand, it's better that they are there and not in a bad home.

I think that's when the US banned imports of the birds, but I think Australia had banned exports before that. I was looking for a bird in '89 and wanted a rose-breasted cockatoo, but at that time Australia had already banned all exports of wildlife.

Yes, but moluccans come from Indonesia and that's one of the countries that animal rights activists still have a big problem with up to this day and age because of the history and continuation of high incidence of selling, buying, poaching, black market, abuse, etc.

Okay. Good to know. I think we have an age on him, somewhere. I feel bad that I'm intimidated by him. He has his favorite people, both men and women.
