Even though he wants the attention, if he is not yet trustworthy, I fail to see why you should feel bad about being a bit intimidated by a flying bolt cutter.

Okay. Good to know. I think we have an age on him, somewhere. I feel bad that I'm intimidated by him. He has his favorite people, both men and women.

No, no, don't feel bad! Only idiots are not scared of big birds that are not bonded to them! Fear is good! The point I was trying to make is that there are ways one can win them over and cockatoos are not as hard as other species because they are so needy when it comes to physical attention. I did not mean for you to just put your hand out there - I meant for you to change the way you address him because, on the video, I heard you talking to him in a kind way but using a normal voice and they react very favorably to high pitch voices and lots of praise given in a singsong. I know that most men don't feel comfortable doing a 'baby' voice but it works with them!

To be fair to Bucca, I've seen the all the Goffins bite people, even the super-affectionate Fred. They seem to get over-stimulated and too excited, and then they bite. I've seen the Citron bite, too.

I don't think I've ever seen Bucca bite anyone. Probably because he is so loud, seems so aggressive sometimes, and everyone is pretty cautious with him.

In the video there, I was getting worried that he was getting too excited. He usually sits in the door of his cage and plays catch.

What you can't see, but can probably hear, is Edward, the B+G macaw who is super attached to Rachel, the woman in the video. He was out of the cage behind me. My fear was that Edward's screaming was riling up Bucca, and with Bucca showing interest in Rachel, we were going to end up with an international heavyweight fight, Indonesia, vs Brazil.

Even when only one bird is out at a time, I worry about someone flying to the top of the wrong cage and losing a toe. My grey took the toe off of a cockatiel 20+ years ago, and SHE was fairly mellow.

For the most part, the birds don't fly, but they can still cage hop their way into trouble.

The other day, Nicholas, the Timneah, decided that he did not like the new, big cage I had set up for him. He wanted his old, rusty, small cage back. I wish he had just decided to bite me, but instead he decided to show his displeasure by pretending that he was that little chicken hawk from the cartoons (the one who used to go after Foghorn Leghorn,) and going after the biggest bird in the place. Nicholas flew off and landed over on the Macaw cages, between Dutch, a GIANT greenwing, and Edward, a very aggressive B+G who defends his cage like it's the Margineaux Line. Another volunteer was over there and, although she could not reach Nicholas at the top of the cage, threw a towel at him just in time to make him fly and save his foot from Edward. Nicolas landed on Dutch's cage. Nick managed to jump to the floor and hide under Dutch's cage before anything bad could happen. He actually let me reach under there and pull him out without biting me.

I've never been bitten by a too but, then, I am VERY careful and all these toos were in my house -it's different for a bird in a rescue because, regardless of how well they are treated, it's not their home with their own human...

I never had any real problems when I had the rescue but that was because the birds were not in cages. It's the cages that do it. If a bird is perching on a branch and another bird flies and perches too close or above it on another branch and the first one doesn't like the second one and lunges, all the second bird has to do is fly off somewhere else. But, when you put cages into the equation, the whole thing becomes a fight for territory and nest.

What does DYH stand for?

Nevermind, I googled it :).

In case anyone else is wondering, here's a direct copy-paste from Google:

The yellow-headed amazon (Amazona oratrix), also known as the yellow-headed parrot and double yellow-headed amazon, is an endangered amazon parrot of Mexico and northern Central America. Measuring 38–43 centimetres (15–17 in) in length, it is a stocky short-tailed green parrot with a yellow head.

I know that and am not intending to correct you, it is just that you told us that you think he is a she, so I use it.
