Awww, that's great!!! Volunteers end up adopting a lot, don't they? That was another reason why I had to stop volunteering...

There is some kind of time frame, in which you cannot adopt another bird. I think it's 6 months, or 9 months.

Today Buddy, the plucked goffins, decided to run up to my shoulder and groom my beard. We were so short-handed, I vpildnt spend much time with him. He's still pretty skittish, but very affectionate.

I really enjoy this thread. You are picking up on their personalities and it is beautiful. When they get forever homes you should give them a written explanation of who they are and what they do.

Yes, that is a great advantage of having steady volunteers, because they learn the birds different quirks and, as everybody shares the info, whoever is there when the prospective adopter comes, can convey it. At the dog and cat rescue, we used to keep clipboards for each dog and we would write down what we noticed that day - sometimes it was behavioral, sometimes it was medical (like diarrhea, no appetite, etc).

And yes, John, cockatoos are VERY affectionate. They are the ones that suffer the most when alone, I think...

I don't know if I could ever take a cockatoo. Too much dust.

It does help. Yesterday someone was in looking at Hope, the tiny little female Ekkie we have. She has this gentle little voice, she coos and almost whispers. The potential adopter mentioned how quiet she was. I mentioned that she had, perhaps, the loudest voice in the place when she wanted to. I picked her up, and then put her back down and walked out of the room. I knew what she would do. She let out a scream that sounded a bit like a dinosaur with its toe caught in a bear trap. She doesn't scream often, and she doesn't scream for long, but she's more than capable of a single, world-class yell.

Hope is actually so friendly, that it's hard to tell if the potential adopter is developing a rapport with her, or if she's just being nice because she's nice. I do know that I can't really stay in the room with someone if they're looking at Hope, because she just wants to get to me, sit on my shoulder (which I'm not supposed to let her do), and preen my hair and beard.

This is from last week.

I should get a picture of Hope next to Sebastian. They're both Eclectuses, but Sebastian is at least twice the size of Hope. They may be different sub species. I thought it was an illusion due to the fact that Sebastian is fully feathered and Hope is pretty naked, but he really is art least twice her size.
