Yes, sometimes it's nothing but heartbreak to work in a rescue. I mean, you always hear so many sad stories but seeing the actual victims makes it all the more real, doesn't it?

It's funny the things you can learn about a bird. Buddy was found flying around Providence. He is a very plucked, but very sweet Goffins cockatoo. The other day, he got scared of the water pitcher, and flew across the room. He landed on a table and managed to knock everything off it. I was still holding the pitcher, but I said to him, "Stop being silly. Come back here." He flew right back to my shoulder.

I don't know if he actually knows the command, of if he just came back coincidentally, but I passed it along to the other volunteers and the woman who will be adopting him.

A bird coming to the rescue from a bad situation isn't as heartbreaking as watching a bird who is loved get surrendered.

Ohhh, I don't know... I think both are. Yes, seeing somebody cry her/his eyes out and thinking about how the bird is going to miss that person is heartbreaking but birds that were loved usually get attached easily to another human so, although they do suffer the loss, it only lasts until they find somebody else to love. But, when I see a bird in bad shape and learn a bit about the bad conditions he lived under, my imagination runs away with it and I start thinking of all the awful day after day after day of despair that poor bird has suffered and how hard it will be for its poor heart to trust enough again so as to allow himself to love somebody and be loved back. It always takes sooo long and, sometimes, it just never happens for them...

They also pick up on gesture. You wave your hand when you say come back here and he picks up on gestures and words too.

Big Boy, our 25-year-old Blue Crown Conure went home today.

He has been at the rescue for a long time. We have a nice picture of the facility manager kissing him goodbye, but photo bucket is down right now and I can't load it.

Yes, you get really attached to them even though you know they are not yours...

Navre, I think you are right. A neglected or abused bird coming to the rescue should be a joyful thing. We pitty the bird and hate the human that caused the birds pain but coming to the rescue means it will get a much better life and feel love for probably the first time. A loved parrot that has to be given up is going to suffer for a while before it can adjust.

We have an Amazon that looks like a blue front, but has no blue on his head. The form said that it was species unknown. I'll try to get pictures, but maybe a yellow shouldered? It has a black beak and black feet, not bone colored like the DYH
