And loud. So loud. The M2 is supposedly the loudest bird in the world, coming in just under a jet engine in decibels.

Bucca is a wild caught. He does love some people, and loves attention. If I lived in a warm climate I'd build him a big aviary.

Casey doesn't act like a male to me, John. The behavior on the video is that of an overly hormonal female.

And why doesn't anybody put down a hand for poor Bucca to climb up? Does he bite?

And, Shira, you have no idea of how LOUD a too can be until he decides to scream while perching on your shoulder! This happened only once to me and I swear I could feel my brain vibrating inside my head!

Bucca's does bite. His favorite person was in the room, so there is no way anyone else could pick him up without getting a bite. his favorite person had been handling him just before this.

!

That's what I thought, and why I was calling her a female in the video. They told me he was a male after that, but I don't know if that's definitive.

I meant to ask to have him sexed when his blood was drawn, but the vet was in Thursday and I didn't ask in time.

Look at the tail undercoverts (the shorter feathers under the tail, the ones that grow at the base of it and reach, roughly, halfway the length of the rectrices -the actual 'tail' feathers) and see if they have a very thin, sometimes very faint, grey edge to them or if they are consistently red all the way to their tips. If there is an edge, Casey is a female.

Spunkie, our little blue and gold macaw went home today.

She is the smallest, and the most beautifully colored blu and gold I have ever seen. She is about 20, beautifully feathered, and quiet for a macaw.

I always wondered why she wasn't scooped up faster, but she was waiting for her person to come along, I guess. I knew she was going so I got to say goodbye to her on Friday.

This photo was taken back when her nails were super long.

That perch was there figuring that she would gnaw it down, but she never did. She's not very destructive.

Was just looking at him. Hey layed down in my arms, so it was easy. All the tail indicators seem to point to male. There is no grey edges, the flight feathers do not quite reach the end of the tail, and some other shape thing that someone else knew all point to male. I know that stuff isn't 100%, but as far as we know he never layed an egg in his 19 years, either.

Wait until he molts them. This is a bad time to check on edges of feathers because they do wear out on the edges. As to laying an egg, I had a gray that was thought to have been a male (Elliot) and which I knew was a female as soon as I saw her - her previous owner argued and argued that she had lots of experience on parrots and that Elliot had all the male behaviors so I thought that I could be wrong. Well, two years later, at 21 years of age, Elliot (which became Ellie) laid her first egg.
