Wild Baby Bird

Postby od94 » Tue Jul 14, 2015 2:04 pm

Hey guys! i will share my story here,
on my roof,2 days ago we needed to close all the opening because we were emptying a container that will be stocked up there. But unfortunately on the roof because of the stress and noise, lots of baby birds were abandonned and dead.. and the "mother" cannot enter anymore to feed her babies.. so I took the decision to remove them and do it myself.I live in Lebanon unfortunately there is no special department to give the baby birds to... So I will do my best to raise them,I am feeding them every 20min,and I stop at sunset..and begin at sunrise lol.

Ok my question any idea what this bird is? In fact in a nest there was this bird,he is not accepting to be handfed, unlike all the other that are younger and don't have a problem taking food in their mouth.. but this one is not accepting.. It has been since yesterday night that he didn't eat,I tried to open his beak and place food in it,but he is not responding to much... otherwise he is healthy and doesn't look sick at all, maybe an identification will help ?

Thanks a lot guys! I will share a video about me feeding them.. it is taking time to do.. but I can think of leaving them to die..

I can't tell when they are this young.

The babies open their mouths to be fed when the mom casts a shadow over their faces. So wave your hand in front of him.

The NC zoo uses cat food soaked in warm water, berries or any kind of fruit you have. They take bigger bites than you would think. Cut the fruit to the same size as a soaked piece of cat food. You can use a tooth pick or eyebrow tweezers to pick it up and put in their mouths.

Although I can't be certain of the species it appears to be a baby songbird. You should try waving your fingers or hand in front of its face to see if it will open its mouth to accept food.

If they still have the 'lips' on the side of their beaks, they are too young to eat by themselves so if you don't feed it, it will die. Try putting little pieces of whole grain bread soaked in half water and half fruit juice inside his beak and see what happens (later on, you might have to add some mashed hard boiled egg to it because the bread and water/juice doesn't have enough protein for them). He might be too scared to do the 'feeding response' (when they throw their heads back and open their beaks wide to receive the food from their parents) but he needs to eat.

It looks like a baby Mynah.

Don't feed them water, they don't need it and it can drown their lungs. They can eat lots of things - meal worms, insects, fruit, etc.

Right. Wet food is the only way to keep him hydrated.
While at the zoo I was told the momma feeds them every 20 minutes. Because I did not have to go out and find the food, I was able to feed them enough to last 1 hour.
Birds don't fly and search for food at night so you only have to feed him from dawn to dusk. If you are slow getting breakfast ready he will click his beak to let you know he is waiting.

Not all species click their beaks, Liz. Passerines don't - the babies just throw their heads back and open their beaks while making peeping noises in their throat - like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oB3SNKwyzS4

No, no, nothing to cry about. The babies always ask for food that way, even when they are in the middle of been fed. You need to worry when they don't do it because it means they are too weak for the feeding response...
