Another big one is "I know longer have time". I guess this is at least better to rehome than to let the bird flounder in loneliness.
The first bird I ever purchased was from a pet store. I did not know any better back then. It was for my daughter for Christmas, a princess of wales parakeet, beautiful bird. We also bought a harness and Rachel would take her out with her everywhere. It was horrific the day I came home to find bit of feathers in the entry. The door to Rachels room must not have clicked tightly and even thought Princess was in her cage with the door closed, the cat found a way to her.
a few years ago Rachel asked for another bird, a cockatiel, she found on kijiji. We talked about it and so we made an appointment to go see her ( did the dna test after) She named her Darcy because it could be male or female, according to her, lol. Again, she took her everywhere, constantly cuddled and scritched her, taught her a few behaviours, such as to come when called and to say hi with her foot, bow....
Still at that time I had NO idea how many birds were unwanted! To my mind birds were exotic intelligent fascinating animals and I had no idea that so many people would get one and then want to get rid of it. Back then I dearly wished for an African grey, but they were way out of my price range. I looked on kijiji a few times a week, considering getting a bird for myself, when I came across Kakariki's for sale. Not having heard of them I first googled them and read several sources. I then got one of the ones on kijiji. The man that had them let me reach into the cage and pick the one I wanted.... lol. I was a bit surprised about this. Knowing I would most likely be bitten, and steeled myself for it, I did it. Yes I got a bloody bite, but that was the ONLY time Kiwi ever bit me. Kiwi is a curious, HIGHLY active, entertaining guy. Kak's however are not very 'cuddly'. 4 months later Doug purchased a young conure for me for valentines as we had been talking about a variety of birds and their stereotypical behaviours , so far as I knew at the time. Nearly 2 years later now, Jasper and Kiwi are great friends. they each do their own thing but several times a day you will find them perched within inches of each other, just 'hanging out'. sometimes they 'talk' to each other too, and laugh, Jasper ith his imitation of a human laugh and Kiwi with his EEE-EEE-EEE-EEE-EEE-EE-EEE.
Then came Pixie....Did not intend on getting a budgie, but we were at an anima auction ( I saw on kijiji) looking at guinea pigs ( a lady I help out twice a week wanted one for her grandson and asked if I could pick ''a good one''' .) this sweet little guy was in a Tropicana juice box with a hole cut out of one side and wire taped over the hole. Rachel was with me. We observed the box being knocked over, and one man came by, picked it up, looked, and promptly just dropped it. WELl ! we were both agape, but Rachel began holding back tears ( never liked to cry infront of anyone but me) grabbed my arm and in pleading whispers Please MOM MOM you have to save it. so I did, found the seller and bought it right then before the sale. That begins my 'flock'. after that I tried to stay off kijiji but was drawn to it. looking at all these poor wee birds, wishing I could have them all. enough for today, except that I am so very glad I came to this forum.
