Parrot Speech

Postby ParrotsForLife » Fri Aug 28, 2015 7:42 am

I saw on a documentary Parrot confidential that mother parrots teach their chicks Language but I was thinking since some birds like Tiko were hand reared they wouldnt have learned language from their mother but from their human owner like Tiko dosent make any African grey noises only human noises.Just yesterday when Tiko went to get her nails trimmed there was another African grey named coco we know coco a long time I was scratching his head and he loves scratches and then he tried to bite me and started laughing (A human laugh) thats when I started thinking maybe parrots dont just mimic they understand human speech and when you leave him he says bye and hi when he sees you nobody taught him that be he learned it himself from hearing other people like a baby learning to talk and thats what im trying to say you can teach them how to talk as you would a baby instead of just trying to teach them to say a word show them what it means.

Correct. It's called cognitive speech and it only works when you teach it right.

I don't think there is anything to learn... it's simply using always a word or short sentence at the right time so the parrot realizes that this word or phrase is used to describe something specific or only at a certain time. For example, instead of just repeating Hello, Hello, Hello to them as most people do, say Good Morning! when they first see you early in the morning (a few times, not jsut once) and, in the evening, when it's already deep into the sunset and they are getting ready to roost, say Good night! Say Hello only when you come into the house or when somebody else comes in and ByeBye when you or somebody else leaves. That kind of thing.

Oh yes I know that just thought there would be something about it.

I met Rambo before I took him. He spoke a lot and I thought he was just a mimic. The first day I had him he taught me otherwise. I was calling a little dog named Lola and Rambo was helping me call. When I tired of calling Rambo turned to me and said "Lola not c'mere".
The first week while I was away from the house my aunt heard a kid yelling "HELP HELP HURRY HURRY C'MERE C'MERE QUICK QUICK". Rambo was on the dining room table because we did not yet have a cage for him. Under the table was a strange cat. As my aunt chased the cat around the table Rambo yelled "CATCH HIM PUT HIM OUT". Aunt Betty became a believer.

My IRNs are babbling at the moment both are trying so hard can't see it being to long before they speak I'm using cognitive speech training to try and teach them.
I'm using regular phrases like:
What's in your pot (when I top the treat dish)
Time for bed (when I put them back in their cage)
Watcha doing (when they are on the perch on top of their cage)
We always say good morning first thing and night night when we go to bed.
Another thing we do is always say their names after each phrase one of things we have noticed is when we talk to them sometimes they will babble back which is a new thing so we always praise them.
Think and hope I'm doing it right the only thing that is still frustrating is they are still not hand tame mojo is really confident and will step up on to stick every time but as soon as you move your hand he's off but I'm still going at the birds pace.
Both are coming down to the treat stand to watch what I'm doing if say I'm on the iPad so in my opinion that's progress

When you stop to consider it the only thing that a predator uses to grab a bird is their mouth and our hand is shaped roughly the same way when we grab something, this similarity probably has a lot to do with why so many birds are afraid of hands.
